First time I've seen this problem and it happened on my laptop doh!

When vista boot's it shows the usual bar going left to right - but that's it.

When I try to enter safe mode it stops either on or just after crcdidsk.sys is loaded.

What steps would you take to resolve this issue?

nope, nothing has changed on the laptop as it's my work one - I do all the installing and adding things to this computer.

Been doing a google search on it; seems to be lots of other people in the same situation - but there doesnt seem to be any positive solutions. e.g. http://www.howtofixcomputers.com/forums/windows-vista/hang-vista-boot-appears-crcdisk-sys-62319.html

hmm Confused Sad

unfortuantly that was one of my first move's, it just kicks me on to a menu with the options "repair vista" and "boot normal". neither of which works.

it's a Sony laptop. Thanks for the link got a few ideas to try.

1. remove HD boot, then turn laptop off and boot again with HD in. (long shot I fear).
2. Run chkdsk - seems to be a option; gotta work out how as it wont let me in as admin through the recovery console doh Razz
3. there's a few suggestions to delete certain files mentioned tho I'll use that as a last resort.

whats the best way to get into a DOS type screen that supports NTFS other than the recovery console as that seems to be passworded (which I never set since new - odd).

Cheers for the help! appreciate it! Smile

yeah; that certainly seems like a cause. I'm just trying to think how to work out exactly what it is. As seeing it's a laptop im not too familiar with the whole taking things apart idea. nothing else is attached to it.

alls resolved... managed to get a command promt via a third party boot disk. then run chkdsk.

when it loaded into windows it was configuring updates ~ thus I believe the cause. poxy auto update default settings!! Smile
