Yeah, like the topic says, Im on the hunt for a new ISP.

I've been with BT Broadband for quite a while now. They have been quite good but over the months, I have been getting slower and slower. A few months ago when downloading stuff from usenets and using torrents, I used to get around 200 - 600Kbp/s (From around 11pm - 8am) with my supposedly 8Meg connection, which is pretty good I suppose. But over the last few months, the speed has gone down dramatically. I barely even reach 50Kbp/s anymore, and its not the exchange either because I live about a 5 minute walk from my exchange.

So Im thinking of switching ISP. The one on top of my list is 'Be* Unlimited' which can provide me 24Meg BB in my area for £18 a month (Which is the same as I was paying for 8Meg on BT). First off, Ive read great reviews about them, secondly, They claim they dont Shape or throttle traffic unlike BT which fucking take the piss. Downloading something atm @ 25.0kbp/s!!!!

This was a speedtest done lastnight. I should be getting 8Meg but it barely reaches 2Meg. Shocking!! (And yes, that Mb/s is Megabits not bytes.)

So, I was just wondering which ISP you people in the UK are with and what ones are good that you would recommend me.

Thanks for the help in advance.

If you go with either Be Broadband as you're thinking or with Virgin then you should be ok. A small minority of people have a problem with downloading speed from Virgin but this is mainly area specific so if you know someone local with the 20meg service they might be able to give you an idea if you'll achieve that speed or not. Also worth considering that an upgrade to 50meg is expected in the not to distant future.

I left them a couple of months ago and at that time they were limiting the 20meg tier to 5meg during 4-12pm (or was it 11?) if you downloaded I think it was 3gigs with it resetting after something like 4 hours (so if you went over the cap at 10:59pm you'd have to wait until 2:59am for normal speed). They've improved the hours slightly since but with a longer reset.

Also never trust speedtest.net!!! So many people do but it's incredibly inaccurate..

My 1st isp was BT , then they started capping so i left for eclipse who was great at 1st then got worse so i jumped ship to plusnet , who again was ok at 1st but the got terrible , plus the fact that everytime there was a fault on my line i had to wait 2 weeks for them to do some pointless fault finding only to then contact BT ( A sthe line still belongs and is maintained by BT no matter which ADSL provider you choose ) so i decided to bypass the dancing monkey and go straight to the organ grinder and go back to BT.

Since then my net has been better then it ever has.

To sum up , other ADSL isps might seem great but 9/10 the line still belongs to BT.

Just my 2p Smile

Ive been with Telewest (now Virgin) for years.. despite the bloody expensive monthly fee, its ten times better than anything BT could come up with.. Download speeds do vary and you are capped between 5pm and 10 pm (regardelss if you have d/l that day or not - despite what they claim).. So between 5 and 10 pm i get 4 meg but after that it goes back up to 18.. 39 squid a month for that.. which i consider a rip off.. but unfortunately its the best we have atm..

Virgin media suck, Just stay away they are getting worse by the day. Be* is your best bet I have had no problems with them since I've had it at the other house 7Mb download speed at all times. Upload is 1mb.

What im paying for ATM :

Virgin media - 4mb/384k with capping - £25
Be* - 7mb/1Mb no capping - £14

They are capping 4mb connections to 1Mb now, so you have to laugh when Be is getting the same upload speed as virgin are on download!! Very Happy Very Happy
