Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson; Harry Sloan, Chairman and CEO, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM); Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of New Line Cinema have jointly announced today that they have entered into the following series of agreements:
* MGM and New Line will co-finance and co-distribute two films, The Hobbit and a sequel to The Hobbit. New Line will distribute in North America and MGM will distribute internationally.
* Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh will serve as Executive Producers of two films based on The Hobbit. New Line will manage the production of the films, which will be shot simultaneously.
* Peter Jackson and New Line have settled all litigation relating to the "Lord of the Rings" (LOTR) Trilogy.
Said Peter Jackson, "I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line. 'The Lord of the Rings' is a legacy we proudly share with Bob and Michael, and together, we share that legacy with millions of loyal fans all over the world. We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth. I also want to thank Harry Sloan and our new friends at MGM for helping us find the common ground necessary to continue that journey."
"Peter Jackson has proven himself as the filmmaker who can bring the extraordinary imagination of Tolkien to life and we full heartedly agree with the fans worldwide who know he should be making 'The Hobbit,'" said Sloan, MGM's Chairman and CEO. "Now that we are all in agreement on 'The Hobbit,' we can focus on assembling the production team that will capture this phenomenal tale on film."
Bob Shaye, New Line Co-Chairman and Co-CEO comments, "We are very pleased we have been able to resolve our differences, and that Peter and Fran will be actively and creatively involved with 'The Hobbit' movies. We know they will bring the same passion, care and talent to these films that they so ably accomplished with 'The Lord of the Rings' Trilogy."
"Peter is a visionary filmmaker, and he broke new ground with 'The Lord of the Rings,'" notes Michael Lynne, New Line Co-Chairman and Co-CEO. "We're delighted he's back for 'The Hobbit' films and that the Tolkien saga will continue with his imprint. We greatly appreciate the efforts of Harry Sloan, who has been instrumental in helping us reach our new accord."
The two "Hobbit" films – The Hobbit and its sequel – are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, with pre-production beginning as soon as possible. Principal photography is tentatively set for a 2009 start, with the intention of The Hobbit release slated for 2010 and its sequel the following year, in 2011.
The Oscar-winning, critically-acclaimed LOTR Trilogy grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide at the box-office. In 2003, "Return of the King" swept the Academy Awards, winning all of the eleven categories in which it was nominated, including Best Picture – the first ever Best Picture win for a fantasy film. The Trilogy's production was also unprecedented at the time.

His best work? Have you even read it? It has a completely disjointed narrative. It's just lore without any context to relate to. As a singular work it's fairly inelegant, only when taken as part of the LOTR/Hobbit mythos does it become intriguing.
I love it when people pretend to be interested in something for the sake of appearing cultured. People do the same thing with movies all the time.
I'll say it again like I did in the last thread, anyone who thinks that the Silmarillion would make a good movie, or that it's even possible to make into a conventional movie either hasn't read it or didn't understand it.

Silmarillion I got as book and audio book...gave up after 3 chapters... its to...I don't know...complex is not the the word...simply way over my head...The Hobbit is like a kid's story compared. Simple and a bit naive.

It's the language and naming conventions which make it appear complex. Coupled with the leaps of logic and irregular timescale deviations it's not an easy book to get into.
If you take all that away it's just a series of short disordered fairy tales.
I know this makes it seem like I don't like the book, and there are alot of things about it that irritate me. But there are still some fantastic sparks of imagination and social commentary which make it worth the effort if you have the time and patience. Still, it fails because it has too little continuity.

i totally agree with AM. Quoting the silmarillion as the greatest book of all time has been a thing that has annoyed me from LOTR fans for ages. There is some great stuff in there, but it s by no way a great read, as it is disjointed and unfinished. There is also some really uninteresting stuff in it.
I usually dont recommend it to people, just for the hardcore fans.
I believe you misinterpreted my first reply, I wasn't refering to the storylines of the book, what I actually meant was that the Silmarillion would be a visual masterpiece, and that I will insist on saying until this movie is made. there are action passages on the book that when compared, make the best sequences of LOTR seem like child's play, that's what I was refering to, I'm sorry if I was unclear.

Randal Graves: All right, look, there's only one "Return," okay, and it ain't "of the King," it's "of the Jedi."
Hobbit Lover: Oh, Star Wars geek.
Randal Graves: Oh, I'm the geek? Look at you two whipping out your preciouses.
Elias: You'll have to excuse him, he's not "down" with the trilogy.
Randal Graves: Oh, what the fuck happened to this world? There's only one trilogy, you fucking morons.
Hobbit Lover: You know what, maybe we should start calling your friend Padme, 'cause he loves Manakin Skywalker so much, right?
[in robot voice]
Hobbit Lover: Danger danger, my name is Anakin. My shitty acting is ruining saga.
Elias: [chucking] Yeah, you're crazy Jar-Jar.
Randal Graves: Oh, I'm crazy? Those fuckin' hobbit movies were boring as hell. All it was, was a bunch of people walking, three movies of people walking to a fucking volcano.
Quote:
Randal Graves: And what's with that gay fucking look, I thought Sam was going to saunter over Frodo and suck his fucking cock. Now that would have been an Academy Award worthy ending.
Hobbit Lover: Hey faggot, Sam and Frodo aren't gay! Their hobbits!
Randal Graves: And then after the Frodo and Sam suckfest, just before the credits roll, Sam straight up fucking bricks in Frodo's mouth.
Quote:
Elias: Ha, Chicks dig Lord of the Rings, Randal.
Randal Graves: Shyeah, the kind of chicks into swords and elves and shit, and I wouldn't fuck them with the Torch of Gondor.

I agree with this, would have loved to see the world and story told completely through the eyes of del Toro. Though his footprint will still be on this, since he Peter and a third guy were very close in the script and how to portray the whole movie.

Can't believe you guys are so excited about some movie about some midgets? In the Tolkien world populated by badass/powerful beings like orcs, goblins, elves, dwarves (different from these stupid hobbits I may add) and those other orcs, the hobbits were the most gayest creatures around.
