I took a cab home from work today and the guy who was driving was reading either the koran or some other mid eastern holy book.
He almost when through the backends of like 3 ppl. We missed hitting an eighteen wheeler by inches.
And the fucker kept doing it even after i bitched. I felt like slapping the fuck in the back of the head.

So what do you guys think?
Does anyone here read while they drive?
Does anyone know anyone who reads while they drive?

Cause using a cell phone is one thing....reading is a whole next danger i would like to avoid.

I believe it is Illegal here, but there is no distinction made as to what it is. What I mean is that it is illegal but it's not called driving while reading, most likely it's something that falls
under wreckless driving.

I see idiots doing all sorts of shit they shouldn't be doing all the time. Talking on cell phones, reading the paper, putting on makeup, eating (not snacking, but mowing down on a burger or something)... fuck, even if the cops just pulled them over to give them shit I would be happy.

Impaired driving, it's that simple, if you are not paying attention to driving you are in fact impaired and it's proveable by showing poor judgement. As far as I'm concerned it's the same as being drunk.

they'd probably think twice about doing it again when they explain to the insurers that they crashed into another car while reading, coz they wouldnt be entitled to any money what-so-ever, but the person in front would.

obviously, evidence, but dont nitpick...

yeah, its common knowledge. Might be some fighting with the insuranse companies, but hitting a car from behind you are pretty fucked.

Still doesn't help the problem. Sure the one person you do this too may think twice. But this leads to increased insurance cost for all of us, depending where you are, you may have just added to the costs of your social medical system, you just caused an un need accident on already overly crowded roads. IMHO its completely moronic to cause an accident, even if the person is driving with undue care and attention. And yes, even if you are driving with undue car and attention, if you carry full coverage insurance, you vehicle will be covered. The only things not covered is driving under the influence of a controlled substance, and trying to commit suicide. At least that what my insurance policy reads. If you don't have full coverage, you wouldn't be covered regardless.

pretty common in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) as well. Eating is also common...one of my friend's does that all the time and it pisses me off.
We'll be going somewhere, he'll pull through a mcdonalds drive through, gets a big mac combo and eats it will driving...drives with his knee's and shit. Using your knee for a sec while you do something is one thing, but actually driving with your knee's....retarded. I hate being in car with that guy

Ok, i would maybe just break a little hard to make him panic, then he would probably think twice. But.. a dads friend of mine did that with a girl putting on makeup while she drove very close to him, he breaks... she almost hit him in the back, 2 more min and she is putting on makeup again... some people just don't get a hint. It could be a school kid nex t time. I really don't think people like that should be allowed to drive a car :\

Cell phones drive me nuts. I have had people do all sorts of really stupid things like change lanes without looking. The thing that pisses me off is that they run you off the road or cause an accident they don't even know. They just keep driving.

I will eat a piece of bread in the car but but nothing messy.

I answer my cell in my car, but I usually only talk for a few seconds, I'll be like look I am driving, let me pull over I'll call you back, unless I have my hands free set. cause I can pay attention and talk, but not with only one hand.

Mobile phone driving jail threat
The new guidelines could extend to sending texts while driving
Motorists caught driving dangerously while using a handheld mobile phone face jail under new guidelines.

The Crown Prosecution Service guidance follows a policy change announced in September because of concerns that too many drivers flouted the ban.

Most drivers will still face the standard penalty of a fine and points.

But where driving falls far short of what is safe, prosecutors can press charges of dangerous driving, which carries a maximum two-year sentence.

When he announced the change in policy earlier this year, Director of Public Prosecutions Sir Ken Macdonald said such cases could include sending a text message while driving.

Hands-free ban

Meanwhile, a major employer has banned the use of legal hands-free kits because of research suggesting they have no safety benefits.

Chatting to a passenger can be distracting, but what we found is that it's less so than having a mobile call
Dr Nick Reed
Transport Research Laboratory

One of the UK's biggest transport companies, FirstGroup, has announced that none of its employees will be allowed to use hands-free mobiles.

FirstGroup operates more than one in five local bus services across the UK, and trains including First Great Western.

The firm's bus and train drivers are already banned from using them and that will be extended to any staff on company business.

It follows findings by the Transport Research Laboratory that having a phone conversation could be more dangerous than drink-driving.

According to the research, a driver on the phone is more distracted than one who has drunk as much as the legal alcohol limit.

'Modify conversation'

The risk of a crash was four times higher when the driver was on the phone, the study found.

Dr Nick Reed, from the laboratory, told the BBC that part of the danger from using a mobile phone was because the person at the other end could not see the driver.

He said: "Chatting to a passenger can be distracting, but what we found is that it's less so than having a mobile call.

"What we think that is to do with is that the passenger can see the traffic around you and can maybe pick up on your body language cues, and then modify the conversation accordingly."

The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, a charity which lobbies MPs, told BBC Radio 5 live that there was "still a hard core" of drivers who continued to use handheld mobile phones.

Executive director Rob Gifford said factors taken into consideration by prosecutors would include speed and overtaking.

"Those are all factors which the Crown Prosecution Service would consider and think 'yep, there was this incident, these things contributed to that incident taking place, therefore we'll lay a charge of dangerous driving rather than one of careless,'" he said.
