I downloaded and biurned the new dash update, since im banned from live. But when i pop in the xbox and the update loads up, the console resets like normally, but then i get this error "Cant update your console please contact xbox customer service." Had the same problem a while a go, when running Halo3 for the first time. Since my dash was old it insisted on updating and got stcuk after the reset. I had to clean the lens for it to be able to complete the update.

I've had the same error message as you though the update went fine. The info screen says that it has the latest kernel (6683) and all games work fine.

Maybe the updater tries to connect to Xbox live to show you some welcome-info-screen and fails.

That might be it. It probably had something to do with live
