hitmanuk - you can update via other sources and there is even a trick to get the xvid playback functionality. I found the guide on #fw @ efnet. You do however need to purchase a cable that allows you to hook the xbox hd up to your pc as i recall. If you have a friend with a not banned console, why don't your try taking your hd over to their house?

He said the Divx update -- Have you tried to get that one off of there?

Well the link to the guide is down, otherwise i would post it for you. I have no idea if it actually works - i updated before modding.
This is the link if it comes back up:

Its the same update. I had to update when trying to play a certain file, the dash update didn't include Divx support AFAIK. I did the dash update, then was required to do a separate media format update when trying to play the file.

Yeah my post got changed as well. Whatever, I'm not worried about it. I think the only thing left for him to try regarding the Divx would be to take your hd to a friends house add a 24 hr gold member trial and put in a divx movie - dl the update take home and see if it works. Or if that guide ever comes back up try that. Although i've heard that the divx is signed in someway. Who knows, I'm certainly not going to say i do.
Good luck

Did you ever think their console might be banned. Man, why can't people just be half decent. Once again somebody thinks they have to put someone else down to make a suggestion and once again, they are wrong while being cocky...
I suppose i should rephrase* the wrong portion, but just imagine for a second that they are banned or do not feel like moving a tv and xbox 360 next to their router. Their could be any number of reasons why they are asking. Your post is counter productive.

I went to my friends house with my hdd, and played a xvid file from a usb stick. His xbox said u need the media update. After i downloaded it to the hdd the movie played. But when i came home and tried to do it, it asked for the update. I checked on the sytemblade in memory and there is a 2mb media update right there. My guess is that its not installed on the xbox itself. So it seems that its not possible without live.

I will test later, but i think it's possible without live. I think the problem might be that it's locked to the console it's downloaded on.

its not posible to get the divx update if your console is banned, even if you can connect it to the internet. it cant be burnt to a disk and its signed to your console whn its downloaded.
so if your banned your fucked. get a new console or live without divx. if your not banned just connect your console to the internet and bada bing you will have divx playback.
oh yeah tihkal......shut the fuck up cock breath. if i had been talking to you, you would know about it.

the only way getting the divx codec on your xbox is connecting your xbox hd to your pc as stated earlier
