Ok so my 500GB internal SATA took a shit on me. I can turn it on and get stuff on it but only for about 5-8 minutes before windows starts giving me delayed write errors. I used a few recover progams including some drive to drive copy from WD and they all work fine till windows gives me that error. I got an external mybook re-formatted to NTFS waiting to be eaten up by my internal.

So what are my methods available?

And a future thanks to Sensi cause allah knows he'll be the one to solve it.

can you copy for a certain amount of time or up to a certain point on the drive?

Have you tried it in a different system to make sure it is really the drive and not bad ram or similar?

Can you disable the onboard cache of the drive via the WD-tools? And if so, does it help?

What do the WD-Tools say on the drive status? [havent used their tools, but other manufacturers have hardware level error detection in their hdd-tools usually]

- ya I can copy fine untill windows tries writing something then fucks up then the backup software stops working as well.

- Dunno how to disable the cache with or without the tools.

- Status is sometimes unavailable etc. I used their tools once to scan the drive but got some cable error and to reconnect cable. So I tried a new sata cable and new port but nothing. I know it's not my connections cause my Games HD is a SATA too and works on them all.

if you can copy fine till windows fucks up, try to copy untill that point, reboot, start copying from that point on and see if it freezes immediately (sector unreadable, hardware issues, bad file tables?) or not (windows fuckup, hardware overheating, random error, wtfbbq)

you could also try to copy from a different operating system like a linux-live-cd (or a windows PE cd, like BartPE) and see if it s helping.

Oops missed your thread, hope you fixed your thing coz i can't think of anything that wasn't mentioned by Lutzifer, excepting disabling write cache in the device manager, dunno which WD tool if any is able to disable for a time your hard drive cache/buffer. Neutral

in my whole life i had one WD disk it was a 850mb , died after 2 years - they make crappy disks , the funny thing about it is that my Samsung 550mb still works after those 12 years

so Samsung 4live

Did you tried those Linux live boot CDs or Hiren's BootCD , maybe they will help you recover those files ?

eh I got my games back just in time cause the drive started saying it isn't formatted lol.

WD doesn't make crappy disks and never has. All companies have their disks that fail, shit happens. This WD lasted 1 year and I was tough on it so no big deal. I've got an old as hell 80gig EIDE and a used 80 gig off of ebay and it's still running strong for 2+ years now.

Did you update your drivers recently for your SATA? If so you might want to go back a version. I had a similar problem with some intel drivers, but when I went back all was well.

the firmware is for a RAID setups.

Quote:

This firmware resolves an issue where a WD1600YS, WD2500YS, WD4000YS, or WD5000YS hard drive is dropped from a RAID set without reporting errors after a period of normal usage. This utility is designed to upgrade the firmware of the following hard drives:

* WD1600YS
* WD2500YS
* WD4000YS
* WD5000YS

And since I've already said if 17 times already that I got what I needed and im returning the drive, why not another time.

Sounds like a Maxtor disc Razz

Never had a problem with a WD. A friend had an external 320 WD that hit the ground once and got fucked up. My laCie (seagate disc) have done that 4 times without any problems Razz

Im sure it could be a "monday disc". Some are just very unlucky it seems like :\
