My bet is the E8500...or? Thats simply based on price/GHz Smile

I am set on getting a wolfie myself, as it seems the yorks have all been pushed back from the jan timeframe, perhaps because of manufacturing issues. Plus from reading up on the first quad 45nm, it still makes more sense to run dual, especially for mostly gaming. The overclockability just cant be beat, and probably wont anytime soon as it seems as most devs are pretty lazy on getting on the quad-optimized bandwagon. So yeah I figure 45nm dual is the way to go.

And I'll most likely be getting an e8300...I figure since its got all the features and the same cache...and about 4ghz oc'd should be plenty for a while at least Very Happy

I am gonna OC my C2D another few Ghz. I don't really feel it's necessary yet to upgrade.

Yeah prolly not worth it for peeps with a decent C2D already as it's just a die shrink with slightly more cache. That's unless it can go above 4 or if you don't like to OC.

As for the dual/quad I'd go quad, more people who jump on the bandwagon the better

A member of the TweakTown forums who goes by the name "Windwithme" has posted some benchmarks of a Wolfdale-based Core 2 E8500. At stock speeds, the CPU completed the 32MB SuperPI test in 15min 12.828 seconds - while the time improves by around three minutes when clocked at 4.4GHz, scoring 12min 17.86 seconds. Upping the clocks to a max 4702 MHz, the CPU scored 9.860s in the 1MB test. The setup used an Asus P5K3-Deluxe motherboard.

This is all done on air cooling. So yeah, seems pretty likely that 4ghz(and higher) is very much a realistic goal with the die shrink. Plus on applications that support it(right now only divx converter and some synthetics I believe), the new SSE instruction set alone boosts perf up to 30%, so will add a nice little boost to add to the mix.

Wow that sounds really retarded for some reason? Another few Ghz? Laughing

Anyway as far a CPU limitation goes, I personally don't care for 30-45 seconds off converting video formats. If they help with Crysis, World in Conflict and Supreme Commander then I'm all for it.

In terms of real world performance in applications I use these new CPU's don't really benefit me relative to the cost to purchase. I'll upgrade when going from C2D -> ??? is = to going from P4 -> C2D.

Had forgotten about the SSE but it's not really going to affect me.

Impressive that it OC's well above 4 tho! Smile

Just preorderd me a E8500, 230Euro is to cheap not to really!.
And my mobo can only run the Wolfdale (EVGA 680i) unfortunately. I have to get a new mobo to run the Yorkfield, but I am building a new system later this year so...Smile
