If you want a sneak peek at the GeForce 9800 GX2, [H]ard|OCP has exclusive pictures, specs and this time the source cited is trustworthy. The GeForce 9800 GX2 card unites two 65nm GeForce 8800 GPUs working in SLI configuration under one hood, I mean PCB. The card will feature 1GB Frame Buffer and 256 stream processors. The GeForce 9800 GX2 will launch in late February or early March as it now stands and will replace the 8800 Ultra (single GPU) card in NVIDIA's high-end product line up. The 9800 GX2 is said to be 30% faster than a 8800 Ultra. Now I give you the pictures:

Man this blows. I was hoping for a single dedicated monster card, not some half assed 10% SLi knockoff. Looks like a while before we see a true next gen card from Nvidia, they are hoping this thing holds the crown for a while.

ATi is doing the same shit with their new card, slapping two together on one PCB.

Agreed, not too exciting. Weird that they just slap two 8800s together, essentially, and rebrand it as a 9800. Would have expected more of architecture change. Actually I was expecting the 9600gt to run faster than a 8800gtx, but if the new flagship is only talked about as being 30% faster(which I am sure is generous as all early claims are), I doubt the whole 9000-series is much to talk about.

Well, Nvidia sure doesn't need to do much to fight off competition, that's for sure. But pretty pathetic that they are just appealing to the $1000+ gfx solution SLI crowd, especially when current trends are towards lowering power requirements. Oh well, I am sure someone out there(ie idiots) will buy some just for bragging rights.

Core i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz | 6GB OCZ DDR3 8-8-8-24 @ 1600mhz | eVga x58 Mobo | 2 x eVga GTX 460 SLI | Intel X25-M + 3x Seagate + WD Black = 2.75TB | X-Fi Titanium | PCP&C Silencer 750 | G15 KB | G5 Mouse | G35 Headset | Z-5500 Digital | Samsung T260HD

Hm, I am pretty confused as to the name here...9800...We had this discussion in another thread recently, and I guess the rumor was true then. I also read somewhere that NV will not launch the GTX version of the G100 when it comes, but rather go with the GT stuff 1st, due to the market. We will see, for me GX2 is simply an interlude...but a pretty lame one as the 7950 GX2 never worked, from a profit point that is. A lot of money for oldish tech...I stick with my 8800GTX until the "TRUE" next gen comes.

we should not expect anything out of NVIDIA in terms of next-gen technology at least until mid-2008.

The GeForce 8800 GTX will be replaced by the GeForce 9800 GTX in February / March timeframe. This card will support Tri-SLI.
Better have Tri-SLI support (God knows who will actually use that), as that's what NV has put their money on with the 780I/790I.
Still lets wait and see what that GTX actually is...

Tri-SLI is silly like quad core cpu.

If the 9800 is to replace the 8800, then my prediction was good: The gpu and cpu won't be any better anymore and maybe for a long while too!

If it's on the same pcb i'm not sure it will be treated as an SLI card, you may get the extra power without any SLI-specific coding. Not sure on this one tho. Might be at driver level..

Either way you'd have to be absolutely insane (or insanely rich/stupid) to consider buying this when the real new nvidias are around the corner. Mad enough to buy any card atm if you can hang on. The 8800gt is cheap for a reason..

I wouldve bought the 3870's for the same reason bought the 8800GTs. So by your argument, anyone who buys good bang for buck cards from ATI is telling them its ok not to have enthusiast cards?

Retardedness. I bought my 3870's because crossfire is superior to SLI in terms of scaling for the most part, and I run a high resolution; and because the motherboard I wanted was crossfire supported, not SLI. Your argument is flawed sir. Wink

Probably because they know you can grab 2 8800GT's within a similiar price range by the time that thing comes out.
