|
 |
It's been a few years, I know there a shit-tonne of them out there, but I don't know what to try.
The only MMO I've ever gotten in to was Age of Conan. I didn't like WoW, Fallen Earth, APB, Guild Wars 2, or FFXI. Combat is always laggy, shit, and very bland. Not that AOC was very different, I just liked the setting.
Surely there's something out there that breaks the mold. Is The Old Republic really that bad?

SWTOR is a single player game that just happens to have other players running around you. If you go in with that attitude, you'll have a good time I think. They loosened some of the more moronic restrictions, so if you don't go in for MMO-reasons, it's a decent Bioware RPG.
Champions Online or DC Universe Online can be good if you're into superhero stuff. Both of them are limited and clunky in their own ways, but decent timesinks.
Planetside 2 if you're into massive FPS battles. And I mean MASSIVE. Just make sure you join at least an open group that coordinates, preferably an outfit (guild) for maximum enjoyment.
You could also try some of these match based MMOs. Mechwarrior Online, World of Tanks, War Thunder, Star Conflict, etc.

Well it doesnt rly seem like mmos are for you if you didnt like the ones you tried so far.
TOR is not that bad the story of some classes is pretty good, combat is standart tab target so if you didnt like wows combat you wont like it her either, game is ruined for me and many other with one of worst f2p systems in the whole mmo business, basically they lock away almost everything behind a paywall, you cant even have more then 1 actionbar without paying its just ridiculous, so if you want to play it its probably best to pay the sub.
The games i can recommend not on your list:
Tera : great action combat and gfx, meh questing and endgame. f2p
Rift: standart tab combat, pretty good questing, dynamic events and a shitton of content and features. f2p next week or now with raptr
The Secret World: combat is bland, very good questing, very interesting setting and storys. b2p

If you want to try out TOR, you can live with the F2P restrictions for the first couple of planets. You'll well and truly know if it's to your liking by then. If so, I'd suggest either buying a 1 month sub (then cancelling) or paying for something in the shop so you can get "preferred" status. It's the mid-rung - still F2P, but with some of the restrictions eased (more quickslots, etc). You'll need that to be effective past around level 20. It's very grindy though, especially with the reduced XP for F2P (although they are having double XP weekends at the end of June/beginning of July). I would think if you hated WoW combat, you won't think much of TOR. If you want to do PVP or raids, you have to sub.
The class stories (the only reason to play) are a bit of a mixed bag IMO. If you liked KOTOR's story, you could try the Jedi Knight class, as that was written by Karpshyn. I haven't done any of the Republic classes other than Trooper beyond the starter planets though, so I can't speak much to them (and Trooper, at the halfway point, was pretty meh). I've finished 2 Imperial classes (Sith Warrior and Bounty Hunter) and got halfway through the other 2 (Imperial Agent and Sith Inquisitor). They each had their moments, but none of them set my world on fire exactly. The biggest problem I've noticed is that there seems to be a lot of disjointedness between the 3 chapters of each class story. I'm not sure if it is from multiple writers each doing separate chapters or what. From what I have seen, it seems like chapter 1 (up to around lvl 30-ish) is generally far stronger than the remainder for most classes.

I for one am waiting for Gloria Victis to freshen up the genre. I hope it does, that it is. It's kind of like a Gothic MMO from what I understood since I discovered it. We'll see I guess...
When it comes to MMOs I'm pretty much like you. I did like Vindictus enough so I could sink almost 100 hours into it I think. That one's different since it focuses on combat a lot, with levels being instanced and working more like a coop game that way. Besides that, Age of Conan is the only one I can say I liked too, but I never really played it a lot.

Have you tried The Secret World? It runs on an updated AOC engine, so while it's technically demanding it looks pretty damned good. Its focus is more on story/secret society lore, and it plays pretty different from most other MMOs (one character can eventually acquire all the skills.)
The only downside is that, while it no longer requires a subscription, you still have to purchase it for a one-time fee of $30.
Just throwing it out there.

I really don't understand why with todays PC's, and lets be honest, pretty fast broadband, that MMORPG's cannot be created with a decent combat model. I simply don't understand, other than pure laziness on the part of developers.
After all, with something like CoD which at the end of the day, is an RPG with guns, you get the twitch combat that would obviously work so well in an MMO.
And Tera doesn't count because it was just normal MMO combat dressed up with you being allowed to press a button to make the move happen. And you got to dodge ONCE. Same for Guild Wars II, that was slightly better... but still the same combat, but you could dodge TWICE woohoo... At least GW2 combat felt a little faster and a bit more energetic.
I'm not thinking about Skyrim combat (lets be honest here.. that isn't exactly a deep system ) - just something that gives you the option to employ skill rather than rely on better gear - gear helps, but I would feel more satisfaction defeating an opponent because of my own ability.
Oh and while we're on the subject... get rid of health bars - they offend me. If I'm in a battle with a sword and shield, I don't get sliced 5-6 times and THEN die... I block, parry and take a hit on my armour, which is never reflected in MMO's. Why not have endurance instead, with each block parry and hit sapping it until you are almost exhausted, THEN you get struck once and you die. IT would look good, play better and feel excellent. IMO.
I need lots of money.. I'd develop the best MMO ever.
BTW Fuck off moderating my posts.. if you can't understand sarcasm, then say something rather than edit my posts - that's utterly pathetic.

EVE Online. The most unforgiven but also the most rewarding game i have ever played, and i did play EVE for nearly 7 years.
Biggest downside is that its not really a pick up and play for 30-60 min a session game, which is the main reason i quit the game last year.

Rift. You can get the base game+expansion+30 days free play from Raptr if u play it for 14 hours. In 3 days it goes F2P and you will have every bonus as someone who played it for a very long time (payed for it).

I don't wish to cause an argument, but EVE is just a glorified spreadsheet sim, with nice GFX. In fact, it is almost the same as normal MMO's as there isn't much twitch combat going on.

Yes, EVE is great for what it is but if you expect some piloting skill based game you will get very disappointed.

i played rift now for a few days, got the full game and expansion and 30 gametime with the raptr promo, and i am having a blast. It has a nice setting and you can do shitloads of stuff to gain xp. Heck, pretty much everything you do gives exp. Also the skill/soul system is pretty nicely done and gives a lot of different "classes".
Anyway, get the free trial version, get the raptr app and then stay logged in the game for 14-15 hours (its not fix, you need to be in the top 80% or something, which is 14-15 hours somewhere played) and you'll get the full game with expansion and gametime. But hurry, in 3 days it goes f2p. With the full game, you'll have veteran status which gives advantages (check on their site).

Does the Rift veteran status only apply if you have an active account or will it be enough if you've had one active earlier?

Oh! And if you have bought this game it's already free to play. You can login and play no sub.
