Ok so I am seriously starting to think of getting a new mobo, reason being that it seems that NV is taking the piss as to regards to Intel's new 45nm CPUs. I have so far not seen any HARD proof that my EVGA 680i will be able to run for example a C2D E8500. There is a lot of posts all over the net that says there will be a Bios Patch...but not a 100% "yes it will be ok" from any official Nvidia spokes person etc.

Have anyone here come across a statement that clearly says that the NV range 650-680i will be able to run at least the new C2D 45nm?

I am planning to get a X48 otherwise...or simply the ASUS Maximus Extreme

I sure as hell hope so! Im not gonna invest in a new mainboard until the next generation hardware... But all in all im quite sure they will release some sort of compatibility for all us 680i users.

Hehe... yeah this stuff sucks.

I only upgraded a few months ago to a Core 2 Duo E6550 (overclocked) and immediately looked for a motherboard with a P35 chipset that already had 45nm CPU support in it's specifications.

Of course back when the first core 2 duos showed up there was no way to know about this stuff :/

Wolfies should run fine with the 680i but the yorkies are a no-go. Lot of rumours flying around at the moment about how intel sabotaged nvidia by not giving them actual specs to make changes for yorkfield compatibility. So unless you're buying a quad-core you should be ok.

Got my E8500 today...well, almost. I was at lunch when DHL came (had to pay on delivery, I always buy stuff like that as I would never pay anything before I have it in my hand), so I have to pick it up in the morn. Anyho, got time to do some OCing on the weekend at least Wink.

As for now I am water cooling the CPU, the rest is stock EVGA 680i SLI stuff for the mobo.
http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=40697
Plan to extend the water cooling to the gracard and S/N bridge, but on my next rig...basically when the next gen NV gracards are out later this summer or so.

But sure will post some OC results in the morn or the weekend.

BAD BAD news. Believe me, I did my best , but I only manage to come to the loading bar on Windows, sometimes to the DT, but freezes directly. I will post on the EVGA forum and see what comes up. Back on the good ol E6600 at the mo, but wont give up that easy Smile. Good thing I have 2 tubes of AS5 and Heat sink cleaner stuff at home .

Yeah that's too bad. I was hearing that it might be possible with a update for 680i and even 650i(what i had before) mobos to run these new chips, but I decided to upgrade beforehand just so I didn't get stuck with a new processor and playing the waiting game.

Anyways, not to rub it in or anything, but I'm off to have some fun setting up n OCing(after burn-in period of course) my new baby, my e8400

If it's getting to that stage it means that the board is recognising the proc. Does the post screen display the type/speed of the cpu correctly. The problem might be something else like incompatible mem, too high a voltage or maybe windows doesn't like having a cpu changed on it. Try doing a repair or fresh install of windows and see if you get anywhere.

Yea well all shows up ok in when BIOS loads. But...anyho, just had a 5h session here, and tried different things, and still no go. This time I even took out the wc rad so I could get at the CMOS jumper and the battery to be sure that I cleared CMOS after the BIOS patch. But yea, could also be a VISTA prob. As for now I will wait a bit, I am back with my e6600 (2nd time since yesterday) lets see if there is other guys with the same prob as me with the e8500, EVGA 680i and Vista, i bet you there will be.

EDIT: Lets ponder this. I give up and simply start to look for a new mobo, what would it be...780i, 790i or simply a X48?...

Yep, gave up with the P32 BIOS patch.
Ok its not a EVGA board, but Wink ASUS do make good boards as well hey Smile
One really cool feature is the "Clear CMOS" button on the IO plate, every high end board should have that!. No more jumper and battery swaps!.

Wait, so it would freeze at random spots while booting windows? I've had that issue with other CPU installs and a format fixed them. I'm guessing you did try installing a fresh copy of windows?

Good luck, I bet you are ready to piss your pants waiting for that new mobo.

Yep, fresh copy of VISTA, even disabled the raid 0 etc. Still would crash. I mean, the 680i was never made for 45nm, so ok the P32 BIOS patch in all its glory, but it seems that 50% of all the peeps with Wolfies and 680i's have probs.

The ASUS should be here withing a week or so...if I am lucky.
