I have a ASUS A8M2N-LA mobo and i want to upgrade the cpu, i have googled around and have not been able to get a definitaive answer on what is the fastest it will take without too much fucking around. Please help!

no point in upgrading on that mobo am2 is dead. get a new one intel based and go core 2 duo

However, I had put everything in a new Cooler Master case prior to the new cpu. The new case has a reset button (the Compaq case did not have a reset button). I hit the reset button and it booted up just fine. The bios and windows xp recognize the new processor no problem.

I'm wondering if the reset button is overriding something on the mobo allowing me to get away with the upgrade. It's funny, everytime turn on my pc I hit the reset button immediately afterwards and it works fine. It's been like this for two weeks now.

It bugs me, so I will be getting a new mobo as soon as I get the pennies saved up. I doubt this helps you but it's food for thought, it seems that a lot of people have this board and are stuck in the same situation...

final question would a 8800gtx make a massive difference to my machine? i have a nVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS atm

Yeah, a 8800GT 520mb or 8800GTS 520mb should be well enough unless you play at a very high resolution, plus the 8800GTX is outdated on the video decoding side (lacking PureVideo HD), needs more power, is (near?) already end-of-life as a product, etc.
