Now, I know Swap Magic is cheaper, doesn't require modchip, etc. etc. But if you're willing to spend a bit more (I don't know exactly how much in the US, here in italy the difference in price between Swap Magic and a Modchip is 35-40 euros), mod your PS2. Swap Magic will become a major pain in the ass very soon, because EVERY time you load a game, you have to load the swap loader, do the swap and load it. It may not seem much, but you may do it in a wrong way (e.g. when the disc is still running) and you risk to ruin your PS2. I've been using swap magic for one year and never had a problem, but I can assure you my PS2 is slow starting to die and it's just annoying to load games in that way.
That's my two cents.

Massively quicker, buy a cheap maxxtor 70gb HD, fill it with games, boot to HD from your memory card and you'll never look back

Been using swap magic for years, no problems and no chore at all for me. Mine a V10 and my cousin has been using it on a V4 ps2.. no problems, apart from when my cousin first did his we had to clean the lens before it would read backups.
If anyones ps2 is giving trouble, it's probably just a dirty laser lens, or worn worm arm (goes click a lot)

Got swap magic for my PS2 slim a 6 weeks ago, works fine and nothing to complain about exept that one of the 3 pieces you need to put is a fuckin pain in the ass to install. Also, you can play imports liek PAL on NTSC but its not like Xbox or X360, the game does not adjust to your screen so theres things you dont see. like PAL games on NTSC PS2, you loose a few inch at the bottom. Like for example, in Medal of Honor: Vanguard, i dont see the compass and Hud

Buy a RGB lead, then your telly should support NTSC mode in colour. Or use it on a newer telly, which supports ntsc signals natively. Basically forcing an NTSC game to run in PAL mode creates the same problems wether using chip or swap magic.

You can choose between PAL and NTSC compatibility mode in the selection screen when you load the swap disc.

I used Swap Magic for along time, with the magic card, and also the slim line 3 piece installation, worked good for along time, i also did the hdd kit, an that worked really well, best option, rather swap magic or hdd but that's my opinon, just read up about different modchip's/swap disk's/hdd loader's an you'll get your answer's very quickly, an plus there are many well done tutorial's for beginner's and intermediate's.
