|
 |
I've bought a Philips DVP5960 a while ago, it's a good player, plays DVD's and DivX, great subtitles with modded firmware and reads from USB (FAT32 formatted).
My question is, it upscales via HDMI, but I still haven't got a plasma or a LCD to test it, maybe next month, and i think it only upscales DVD's, not DivX. I don't quite get it, why can it upscale DVD's and not DivX?
Has anyone got one or similar? I was thinking of converting some movies back to DVD, and i was wondering if the quality loss from the original conversion to DivX will be compensated by the upscaling...
Thanks in advance

This is because some DVD players can provide extra information, more detail from base TV which many people without HDTV don't see. There is electronics in the unit which can take advantage of this. Of course DivX uses it's own propriety compression technology, but no advantage over detail and resolution, once uncompressed.
All 1080p tv's have dedicated upscaling picture technology. The quality of this varies from one manufacturer to the next, depending on the technique they use.
If you take a DivX image and bloat it right back up to DVD, then there will be no extra information in the image, since it was never there in the DivX formatted file. If you play the converted DVD back on an HDTV, then the upscaling in the TV set will interpolate extra detail, and try and create a better image. The quality of this will depend on the set as I've already explained.

Can the Phillips 5982 upconvert divx and xvid files? I thought the 5960 was supposed to be able to upconvert divx too.

Oh I didn't read your post properly. I am pretty sure it does upscales divx, as long as its over HDMI. I have been researching these players all morning.

I bought the 5982 today and it does upscale divx files all the way to 1080p. It wont play gmc xvids though, which i thought it supported. I had the same gmc problem with my old 5140. I have to recode them with dr divx. Haven't tried hooking up a USB hard drive yet.

I read Mortibus response this morning... by lunchtime i had the opportunity to test the player for about 10m on a 42PC51 LG plasma.
Ii was unable to upscale the video (s), everytime i pressed the 'HD Upscale button', the screen went blank, and when the picture returned, it always displayed 480p on the screen.
I messed around a bit with the menus, both the player and the TV, but i got nothing. The TV didn't recognize the HMDI input as well, i had to change it manually. It's supposed to handle 1080p input.
@fishslice: thanks for the answer, but it didn't upscale DVD's as well, i tested both
@repo:
That one is supposed to be one mean player, but in fact it doesn't support GMC, not even one level. I also thought this one supported it.
The USB port works really great, i'm using a 4Gb pen because the formatting has to be FAT32, and i dont want to convert my external HD
Anyway, i'll look around a bit, and see if i can test it properly
EDIT: Here's the DivX Test CD 2.0 results, with the supported formats, bitrates, resolutions and so on for the 5960, the 5982 shouldn't be far
