The Ultima serie perhaps but it's pretty old by now and Ultima IX is the only one that will work with more recent OS's like XP/Vista and it's also pretty buggy.

Wizardry is another good serie but only Wizardry 7 gold and Wizardry 8 gold will work on more recent OS's but I would recommend Wizardry 8 as it's a great game.

Might and Magic is also very old-school serie but again it's pretty old and M&M IX is pretty bad compared to the previous games.

The Diablo serie with it's expansion might also be a interesting choice as would Dungeon Siege be but they aren't exactly "traditional" old-school RPG's, mostly dungeon romps and monster slaying with a very basic story.

Final Fantasy is a bit like Grandia but I only played FF7 and Grandia 2 (PC) and it's been years since I've played them.
(Sudoki is a bit more recent and a similar style but I didn't think it was that good.)

Laxius Power is a nice freeware old-school RPG.
( http://laxiusforce.org/phpBB3/ and http://www.laxiuspower.cjb.net/ - also check the underdogs for similar games and other RPG recommendations http://www.the-underdogs.info/genre.php?id=7&sort=rating )

Knights of Xentar, Brave Soul, and Lightning Warrior Raidy are pretty similar to older RPG's but are actually adult "Hentai" games but with RPG elements such as dungeon exploration and monster slaying instead of browsing trough a wall of text and static images.

how much "oldschool" should this game be?

try baldurs gate 2 - really epic ad&d rpg with great screenplay, alot of dialogues, perks, skills, fights.
if you prefer fights, try icewind dale 1 and 2. they are similiar to bg2 but with much more fights and less dialogues.
if you prefer extraordinary screenplay, try Planescape Torment. game with totally awesome world, with alot of dialogues, many random fights and alot of interactions between main characters.

if you are talking about really oldschool games, try Might&Magic VI and VII - its pure rpg based in worlds of Heroes of Might&Magic with all of its monsters, spells, weapons etc etc. its only 2CDs (MM7) but its definitely worth of play.

you also can try really old rpgs such as Ishar 1,2,3, Eye of the Beholder 1,2,3, Dungeon Master 1,2 (which will pwn you for sure). there are also famous title like Daggerfall (biggest and buggest game ever). look sick now but if you can play rpgs without hd graphics, it could be really interrested.

There is also Betrayal at Krondor - classical rpg, Lands of Lore (also classical), Anvil of Dawn.

You can try different kinds of rpgs - Jagged Alliance 2 - simulation of team of mercenaries with alot of guns, enemies, random items, quests, dialogues, npcs.

And last game ->>>> Fallout 1 and 2 - if you like s-f in post nuclear worlds. both of them are 1cd of size but believe me or not, it will be the largest 1cd you have ever seen Smile

i hope you make a good choice. rpgs arent games that need to be completed. i always enjoyed worlds ive visited playing those games :]

Regards

I really enjoyed the Breath of Fire series. Unsure if they're available for PC, but you can get some of them on PC via a GBA Emu.

In style prolly the closest in your list is the Golden Sun games. Which I also thought were absolute classics Smile

Both Gormadok and JBeckman list a bunch of good rpg games.

Thanks, damn, I totally forgot about some of these. Flood of memories came rushing back, like I was just hooked up to the matrix. LOL.

(Well not exactly 'for pc' but...)

Do yourself a favor and play Okami with the pcsx2 emulator.
(Also you can try FFX & FFXII).

The Witcher or Neverwinter Nights I & II+ expensions.

They are not exactly "old school" as in dated (well NWN 1 is but compared to most games mentionned so far it's not) but they are pretty good RPGs with a nice story and that's coming from someone who is not exactly a big RPG fan. NWN also has a lot of depth and class/skills combinaisons you can work it. As for The Witcher , well it's pretty recent but it's also an excellent mature ROG and was one of my favorite game of 2007.

If you're getting ready to play to DQ8, here's a very important tip I wish someone gave me. I sold everything I had towards end of the game to buy spell reflective mirror armor for all my people and overwrote my save, only to find it reflected all my healing & raise spells as well, so I was totally screwed (had to watch final boss battle on youtube). Don't make my mistake.

For my favorite PC old school RPG's, I highly recommend, in general order of preference:

Arx Fatalis ......................................... (love spellcasting by drawing patterns in air with mouse)
Gothic II
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic .................. (spiritual sequal to Arx Fatalis, more FPS action, less RPG)
Gothic III ........................................... (yea, III is finally playable on my rig with the community 1.6 patch, just finished it)
Pool of Radiance - Ruins of Myth Drannor ..... (Great D&D game, had a bad rep, but works great after patching to 1.4)
Temple of Elemental Evil ......................... (another for the D&D faithful)
Wizardry 8
Star Wars - Knight of the Old Republic I ....... (not II, which sux)

... and the granddaddy of them all is X-COM: UFO DEFENSE (if you can get this old game to run well under new OS's)

These all work well as I played all these on my current rig (XP Pro, 2GB Ram, ATI X850 256) with exception of X-COM which was a generation rig ago. If I could get it to work right, I'd play it again.

thanks for all the answers!

im sorry to say that i should have had a second thought on my "played" list, cause all of you mentioned many games i already played... so you did unnecessary extra work thinking about these... sorry

played:
    Gothic II
    Pool of Radiance
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic
    Temple of Elemental Evil
    Neverwinter Nights I & II+ expensions
    all Might and Magic
    Bards Tale
    Ultima
    Elderscrolls
    Baldurs Gate 2
    chrono trigger
    Breath of Fire
    Final Fantasy 8

Gothic 3 i will not play cause its too bugged
will try The Witcher when my new rig arrives

ill look into all your suggestions, especially the japan-style ones (yep, i like em Wink)

I thought the same thing before, but I just installed and played Gothic III with the 1.6 community patch. Played it through all the way to the end without a single internal glitch, and only one single crash to the desktop. Even the laggyness was significantly reduced from original version. Very pleasantly surprised. Just create alot of saves Smile

I didn't see Arx Fatalis on your already played list. Definitely look for this one, plus its just old enough that it'll run great on your current rig with maximum details set.
