I think its time an overview / list is made of the developers that remove the copy protection from their games after a while with a patch or update. This way they can be saluted because they think about their end users. Copy protection (CP) is needed in the beginning but in the long run just an annoyance for the paying customer.

I'm gonna start with a few from the top of my head:
Edit: list is updated with new info from replies.

You guys probably now alot more lets get the list flowing Smile

Beyond Divinity -- (Starforce removed)
Cossacks II -- Update 1.2+ (Starforce removed) <-- Needs confirmation
Dawn of War --
Dawn of War: Winter Assault --
Dawn of War: Dark Crusade --
Doom 3 -- Update 1.2+
Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil -- Update 1.2+
Imperium Romanum -- Patch 1+
Knights of Honour --
Starcraft -- CD check removed with update 1.15.2
Starcraft Broodwar -- CD check removed with 1.15.2
Gothic 3 -- CP removed with Unofficial Community Patch v1.5.2
Neverwinter Nights 1 --
Neverwinter Nights 1: Shadows of Undrentide --
Neverwinter Nights 1: Hordes of the Underdark --
Quake 4 --
Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific -- Update v1.3 - v1.4
Supreme Commander -- CP removed from update 1.0.3220+
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind -- 1.1 patch removed Safedisk only CD check remains
The Witcher Enhanced version -- Will most likely be without protection.
Titan Quest -- (Securom removed)
Trackmania United - Starforce removed from steam version
Unreal Tournament 99 --
Unreal Tournament 3 --
Unreal Tournament 2004 --
Warcraft 3 -- Update 1.21b+

Beyond Divinity used to have Star-Force but it was removed in the latest update.

EDIT: Based on a preview the enhanced edition of The Witcher will skip the protection as well. (Game uses Tages.)

EDIT: Morrowind used Safedisc but it was removed with the 1.1 patch and now only uses a disc-check

EDIT: A patch for Supreme-Commander removed the Securom check, unsure if it's back with the addon or if it's using a disc check.

EDIT: Titan Quest also removed the Securom protection in a patch, unsure what the addon uses but I think it's a normal disc check.

Legally that's usually not up to developer to decide whether to remove copy protection in later patch, but entirely up to publisher. And they are sooo eager when it comes to that sort of thing. Even when game is very old and copy protection prevents compatibility with modern OSes they usually don't give crap. Such short list of exceptions just confirms general rule.

Though i suspect in several cases developers actually released CP-removing patches bypassing publisher.
As i understand developers mustn't release patches on their own(unless developer and publisher are pretty much same thing), patches must pass publisher QA etc which can slow things down a lot.

Yes and that is why it's such a great thing if more developers would influence their publisher to agree on a CP removal once the sales have died down. This will preserve the functionality of their game for a longer time due to no incompatibilities between CP and OSes etc.

It does cause that's publisher-approved community patch, select members of community patch team have limited access to sources, partially development is done by Spellbound(current Gothic 4 developer). So really Gothic 3 community patches are pretty officiall.

Doom 3 still does the Key-check AFAIK.. CD-check is gone but you still have to either block it or use TNT "crack" or whatever to avoid the mentioned Key-check.

Who cares? Key check is not abrasive and doesn't require you to have the disk inside. Wish all were like that.

Well if you download Doom 3 and patch it the CD-check will be gone but when you start the game and try to play it will be closed down with an error message about Key... That's why a lot of people probably cares. It is still a protection that you need to circumvent in order to play a pirated copy of the game.

True but that is no problem for the legitimate users which are the only ones who we should count as being affected by the CP.
