  • Official web page: http://www.apb.com/
  • Publisher: EA Games
  • Developer: Realtime Worlds http://www.realtimeworlds.com/
  • Genre: Team-based multiplayer (previously announced as MMO)
  • Release date: 2009/2010
  • Story/Description:
    Quote:

APB (All Points Bulletin) is an upcoming massively multiplayer online video game for Microsoft Windows, based in urban sprawls and featuring two sides, Enforcement and the Criminals. Players may join either the Enforcers or the Criminals, and form sub-groups in these. The game design is led by David Jones, creator of the original Grand Theft Auto and Crackdown, and is being developed by Realtime Worlds.

  • About Gameplay:
The game takes place in a modern-day, fictional city where there is a constant battle between "Law Enforcement" and "Gangs", and the player will need to decide which side they want to participate on. The two sides battle out for control of the city, with territory within the city being contested continually 24 hours a day, so that players must concern themselves with both offensive and defensive moves. Other activities involving missions within the game allow the player to earn extra money, which then can be used to upgrade weapons, vehicles, and their character appearances, all that influence the game itself.[12] For example, several Gang players may rob a convenience store within the game; the game will then seek out one or more Law Enforcement players of equivalent skills and other criteria, and will issue an all points bulletin for them to stop the robbery. APB also claims it will be the first MMO title where the player's skill determines the character's progression, as opposed to the normal model of time investment.[6] Jones confirmed that players will be able to use the Last.FM service to create custom soundtracks within the game.[6] At a show in Brighton, Jones said that a BETA announcement is 'Very close'. Users who registered before June 11th, 2008 at APB-Evolved were guaranteed beta access by Realtime World's Community Manager Chris 'Ulric' Dye. And that 'A boxed copy is more likely than a downloadable form.' At GDC 2009 it was announced that Vivox would be providing voice chat for the game, the software allows players to customize the voice of their characters with voice fronts, and also to communicate using 3D positional audio.

More of a remake of a remake, if you ask me Wink

Not sure if its officially connected to the original, though.

Guess we know which side you'll be on. I'm off to play the original GTA. All I really remember about APB was getting loads of demerits, and maybe some bribes?

I updated the video. Check out the guy wandering around with a TV.

At the 2008 Game Developers Conference in Feb '08, Realtime Worlds CEO David Jones confirmed that APB would still be released in 2008.

For anyone who doesn't know, Jones is credited as the creator of Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto.

Jones pondered how does a game fill that time without introducing a grind. His answer was simple: "Make the core game so much fun, it doesn't feel like a grind." For inspiration, Jones said his team turned to Counter-Strike, which he considers to be the best online game ever. This concept formed the basis for using players as content, not "artificial incompetence."

I'm hoping that entire interview was meant to be laced with sarcasm, otherwise this guy is in a heap of trouble.

1. Counterstrike the best online game ever? Yea...sure. Just lost any credibility he may have had.

2. Players rather than "artificial incompetence". I'm not sure if this guy has played an MMO lately, but on the whole AI is more intelligent than 80% of the people you fucking meet in said MMO.

I could go on, but it simply isn't worth discussing any further on my part. Those two sections alone kinda killed it for me.

lol counter strike was fun at a time years ago before it became source but its nowhere near the best online game ever, you shouldnt be looking at regular online games when your making an mmo in the first place.

mmo should be 1000x better than any other muliplayer game.

i bet the gameplay in this game will be as repetitive is CS Laughing

For Jones, the industry is facing an identity crisis over the term "MMOG," primarily due to its association with role-playing fantasy games such as Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft. "If you say MMO, immediately you think you're going up against WOW." However, he believes the RPG route isn't the way to go anymore. He also believes that the term "massively" is a bit of a misnomer, since 90 percent of the time in MMOGs these days only 5 to 25 players are playing together due to the prevalence of instancing. To get back to basics, Jones says that his game from now on will simply be called a MOG--"Multiplayer Online Game."

Not really sure what to make of that. Haven't read the full article yet.

If that's true it seems they want to sell it as a Grand Theft Auto MMO, could work as it's a bit similar to GTA but Rockstar might not like it.

For anyone who missed it, the game's being led by David Jones, co-creator of Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings. He also co-founded Rockstar North.

It looks like they bought Realtime Worlds and are creating APB from Crackdown in the same way that GTA3 was a mod of Midtown Madness, after R* bought Angel Studios.

Also, PC only.

This game is completely unrelated to Atari's "A.P.B." from the 80s.

He was most likely referring to the way Counter-Strike has gained popularity. CS 1.6 is still the most played MP game (excluding MMOs obviously) on the PC, and it gained this popularity on a number of factors. Whether you like the game or not isn't the point here, it's merely a fact that CS still is the most successful MP game in many aspects. CS:S never got off the ground as much as Valve wanted it to, because it wasn't an improvement over the existing game; it may look better, but it plays totally different.

My guess the things he sees when he looks at CS are things like:
- The concept is simple, easy to grasp for anyone
- Level design isn't complex either, again easy to grasp
- The game is fit for both professional players as well as your casual gamer; the capabilities of a player define the way it's played

Something along those lines Wink

You do have a point about the intelligence though, 90% of all MMO players seem to have a hard time figuring out what the answer to "1+1=?" is.

Edit: Just noticed the age of this post and the reply I was replying to, my bad >_<

No it's not. GTA was obviously based on the original APB, and the new APB is being made by GTA developer David Jones according to his original vision for GTA. They're as related as they can be, without having to pay royalties to the original franchise holder.

The point I made about Crackdown and Midtown Madness is that R* bought out Angel Studios after they released Midtown Madness, and developed MM into GTA3 instead of starting from scratch.

They seem to be developing APB from Crackdown, although my point about 'buying' Realtime Worlds was a little off. I must've misread it.

When I (and most people) say "related," I mean in a legal/official sense. What you mean to say is that (by several degrees of association), APB, the upcoming MMO, is inspired by A.P.B., the 80s arcade game. But they aren't officially and/or legally related in any way.

Sorry, but I think you've been misinformed. Whoever told you that GTA3 was somehow evolved out of Midtown Madness (or any work by Angel Studios) lied to you.

Rockstar (or rather, their parent company, Take 2) didn't acquire Angel Studios until November 2002 (link), over a year after GTA3 was released. GTA3 was entirely developed (from scratch, aside from the licensed RenderWare graphics engine) by DMA Design, who Take 2 acquired and renamed to Rockstar North in early 2002, shortly after the release of GTA3.

And yeah, it looked insane a year ago, too, but it just never ceases to amaze me.

yea, because character creation makes the game, right?
like it did spore? (which essentially WAS the entire game)

i just get the impression of 'saints row 3'
gta just has a way too much of a head start
saints row and this seem to be still on the level of gta2 in mission structure
the customization is nice, but nothing impresses me so far
not that i don't welcome the competition
just wished it brought more to the table than more senseless anarchy, which i dispense in gta between missions anyway
