It's common thing here in buildings where many have wireless... If they are totally dumb and can't protect (or even read about it) their connection it's their fault... I support it!!

Just remember who ever owns it can see all the passwords and stuff you send through it.

I don't do it, and wouldn't. Just because of what repo! said. Passwords and such. Too open.

Is it ok to not use WPA and WEP and just stick to MAC-Adress-filtering?

Cos if thats so, is 'he' gonna have my msn details or what?
Surely your not gonna notice someone borrowing it if they dont cause you serious lag..

in theory though they cant really get anything unless they hack into you.. and the chances of an XP user or vista user hacking into a MAC based system = fail/near impossible right?

TesterWS wrote: | Is it ok to not use WPA and WEP and just stick to MAC-Adress-filtering? | MAC filtering can be easily spoofed (e.g. SMAC), WEP is weak and can be cracked in minutes (e.g. aircrack). I would not go for anything less than WPA2 (or WPA) with a decent key.

My old room mate is trying to setup a wireless mesh network for free wireless in a small city outside of calgary.
Same concept as people has stated above. A large group of wireless routers, advertised and shared among an even larger group.
If the connection is open, i say use it.

People that run on unprotected networks should try hamster and ferret, pretty useful apps. Getting passwords via unprotected wireless isn't super easy unless the site you/they use doesn't have any encryption. Hamster and ferret allow you to grab their session cookie and use that yourself to log into their accounts.
