It should pass fine. Mine did.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one

What if it doesnt pass, will I get some lockdown of Vista or is it like XP where you can simply turn off that irritating genuine message?

No, you will simply not be able to download what ever it is you are trying to download. Just try it, nothing will happen...bad that is.

If you dont pass you just get annoying pop-ups giving you 30 days, then just install one of the cracks.

Want latest DirectX in Vista ? Install SP1 as well as the March 2008 DirectX runtime.

Download DirectX End-User Runtimes (March 2008) from here http://tinyurl.com/33mnhj
As for SP1, I can't confirm that release doesn't break when installing SP1. I'm sure folk who have applied it fine (or not) will give feedback.

the updates your referring to are dx9 updates not dx10 updates btw... afaik there aren't any actual updates for dx10 yet, although sp1 adds the dx10.1 files.
if you have sp1 then dx9 and dx10 should be up 2 date anyway.

That's not entirely true. I applied a clean install of MSDN Vista x64 SP1 integrated, updated all drivers etc and launched a few games from another HDD (games that don't require an installation to run) and they failed to launch due to missing DLL's. Applied March update, games immediately launched (Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is noted as an updateable OS on March DX update).
So it still rings true as before, in order to run some games in Vista, Dx9 still requires updating. And as said, SP1 adds support for direct3d 10.1 but isn't available as a standalone download.
