A new installment in the Underworld RPG series is in development by some former Looking Glass employees:

Quote:

Neurath, a co-founder of Looking Glass Studios, will oversee the development of Underworld Ascension as the founder and CEO of new indie studio OtherSide Entertainment. "With Underworld Ascension, we are excited to be bringing back the Underworld franchise, making it more vital than ever before," he said in a statement.

Neurath will be joined on the project by Looking Glass fellow Tim Stellmach, who announced his participation on Twitter. "I'm pleased to announce that the @OtherSide_Games team working on Underworld Ascension includes the lead designer of Underworld 2. Smile," he wrote.

Well, this is a fantastic news as far as I'm concerned! Smile I really adored Ultima Underworld 1+2, the first one was among the very first games that I played on PC.

UUW2 is probably my favorite RPG of all times. Hope it will still be a fleshed out RPG, that'd certainly make it my most anticipated game in the coming years Smile

OMG! this is awesome, was about to do another play through of UUW after reading about the delver mod some guy was making here:

http://ultimacodex.com/2013/02/someone-is-re-making-ultima-underworld-using-delver/

This game was so ahead of its time.. even had working physics system a decade before other games.

Okay

I was never a big fan of the Underworld games due to my fantasy allergies.
But any time Looking Glass folks come together to work on a Looking Glass franchise is good news to me.
I just wish Thief 4 were developed in better hands.

Though, wasn't Arx Fatalis like a spiritual successor?

Hopefully they do this justice. Looks like it has potential.

I loved Ultima Underworld when it came out. I loved when the Wolfenstein 3D players were like "This is the best game ever. First 3D game!!11" and I could say "Nope. I've been playing this other game for three months already. And the 3D levels aren't flat. I can look up and down."

Smile

I actually completed that game. I remember stacking 50 potions to reach the runes in the sky that never dropped to the altar due to buginess Laughing

Yeah that was the biggest bug in that game and what a bug to have ... . I completed it as well but except for that, it was a pretty smooth experience for me. I actually enjoyed U9 quite a lot despite some of its rough edges.

But U9 didn't kill Ultima because it was crap - it was supposed to be the end of the series.

A huge fan of the originals, but I'm skeptical on their direction and whether they will get the funding for this one. Why is there any focus on co-op and looking at the comments "the graphics aren't good enough" it really surprises me how many people back games while never playing or even knowing the previous titles.

That's the harsh reality sadly. We should consider ourselves lucky if they aren't asking for cinematics, quick time buttons and regenerating bloodyscreensoreal's Very Happy Laughing

Hope everything goes well with this one, I actually liked the infos/gameplay bits shown so far, but it's still early to tell. They're using Unity as far as I understood, I'm already inside my framerate-drop-friendly lazypants!

slow increase? Yesterday when I looked I thought it was at something like $60K. It's at $215K now, a day later. I think it'll at least make the $600k goal.

Roughly 2 days to go but made its funding, shame the stretch goals were so poor. They should have had Lizardmen in the base game given they were a major faction in the original (mushroom men wtf). Also localization, quality sfx music lore etc as stretch goals

Yeah, reaching the 1.100.000 goal would have been nice as to get all that added to the game but that's how Kickstarter works, not every stretch goal will be met and at least they reached the required level for the base game and some of the additional content.

Could perhaps expand on the game post-release as well, hopefully these guys have a good grasp of the budget required to create the game which has been a problem with many other Kickstarter projects.

Might perhaps go Steam Early Access later on as with Divinity: OS and Wasteland 2 to secure some additional funding too but that has other potential downsides.

In the end they reached 859,056 $ Smile

Some additional language localizations was the next stretch goal at 900.000 and after that was a necropolis area at 950.000 and a new monster at 1.000.000
(Followed by a toolkit, the deeper lore stretch goal and co-op and finally more customization choices for your character.)
