Please list all your vista tweaks such as uneeded services and other mods

EXAMPLE is there a vista BLACK edition>?

this should be the start of a pretty good thread.

please list if your tweaks are aimed towards performance, visual, gaming etc.

Lol, this thread failed.

There is no real hope for Vista at this point, my friend. Ditching it and crawling back to good ol' XP is the best performance tweak you can do !

I see that, the only complain i have about vista is the RAM usage, and the networking sucks, other than that, i have no complaints.....

Why does the networking suck? I have read about some of their networking tricks and to a not-so-knowlegeable user (me) it sounds way better than what xp did.
It was about tcp-windows and what-not settings, which were a global setting in xp thus not possible to tweak well for every situation. Now vista tries to maximize it on a per-transfer basis.

And the ram usage is pissing me off as well Smile Im at 974MB at the moment with just firefox (duh...), utorrent, miranda, zoom player (video [clannad 4 1024x768 h264 Razz]), winamp, Creative thing. Aero Glass is still running though.
With XP i'd probably be at 300MB ?

@ nui

Don't forget that Vista cache a lot of things in the memory (superfetch), which in large part gives us this constant higher memory usage than for XP. Theorically it only make that use of your memory ram when it is not needed elsewhere. You can disable superfetch, you may want to try that if you want to be sure that your memory is wasted most of the time. Wink

@ $en$i
Im grateful for windows superfetch but the ramusage shown by taskmanager does not include the cache i think. And thats my problem, i would like to have more available ram for the cache, but vista seems to use too much for other things.

And disabling superfetch does not seem to free memory from cache (you can see the cache at the performance tab of the taskmanager) - according to that i've got 4 MB of ram left atm Very Happy.
Instead you probably just stop the algorithm that decides which programs to put into the cache - maybe Wink

yeah of course... why didn't i think of that...
instead of working out flaws in software design, ill just buy more hardware... thx for your help Mortibus, much appreciated
Where is the point in new hardware when new software makes it as fast as old hardware on old software?!? Evil or Very Mad

If one was to optimize vista to infinity would one have to go through "Autoruns"?
This tool seems to be the uberversion of msconfig
http://www.filehippo.com/download_autoruns/

You can disable loads of things and drivers and what not, it even seems to be able to cripple the explore to its basic features, but i havent tested it yet, because i'm scared Razz

Well this is another unattended setup of Vista with lot of tweaks, it definitely removes -rather than disable- far too much things to my taste.
Description of it found over a crappy website :

It's fun to see Vista haters keep fighting, like a fly swimming in a turd.

My vista ramusage is at 550MB and cpu usage 0-3% at both cores, that is being ultimate with aero, sidebar and all that crap on. It's also way more intuitive than XP. It's 520 without aero and 490 without sidebar.

Ps. Vista gives way higher games performance than XP while using dual core graphic cards.

Jesus, gotta love to see the Vista haters whining again. Try USING it first, nimrods. Rolling Eyes

Points of interest;

1. Free memory is wasted memory. Period.
2. SuperFetch dramatically increases the performance of your machine -- unless you've got an ancient one, in which case - tough titty.
3. Gaming performance is massively increased over XP. Proven. By me.

I've been running Vista-x86 for over 18months. Zero issues.

LOL! I was just going to post that too. "I heard from a friend of a friend of my girlfriend's second cousin's mother's sister's nephew that Vista was.. blah blah blah"

USE IT. Make up your own damned mind.

Proven? Massively?
The only game i tested was crysis and that was faster on xp. Anyone else had the same impression as Sabin or even better - tested a benchmark of a game or something? Smile

No, but you immediately disregarded my statement based solely on your own, limited in your own admission, experiences.

I find that insulting.

Out of the hundred plus games I've tried, Vista has consequtively proven faster - both in boot/load times and in frames per second performance. Whether you accept that or not is up to you, but I don't lie. I've no need to lie.

-Edit-

Oh and I get 1500 more marks on 3dMark06 with my new card than I did on XP.

We seriously dont understand each other Razz

I did not disregard your statement, but you havent proven anything! I will believe you if you say that those games you played on your pc were faster, nothing more.
I just wanted other experiences, so it might be possible to explain when and why vista is faster than xp. In my experience it was slower, though it was only crysis i tested and that happened some time ago.

And what do you mean by massively? How much better do they run?

Roughly? 10-20fps performance increase, give or take a couple. I don't have exact numbers because;

A. I don't run XP anymore. You couldn't pay me to install that shite again.
B. I'm a gamer, not a bencher. I don't want huge bragging rights by having the world record in 3DMark, I just want smoother gameplay and lesser loading times. Vista has, so far, given me both in spades.

As a matter of fact, I did. DX10-High still runs like shite at 1280x1024 (my CPU is god-awful, I know that) averaging around 16-30fps. DX9-High was better, 19-50fps .. but the 30 and 50 respectively are "highest" The average, usual, gameplay framerate is around 24 in DX9 and 18 in DX10.

On XP it was around 20 in DX9 and there are no DX10 options, unless you use the "ultra mod" in which case, hahahaha! Prepare to see plumes of smoke from your PC Rolling Eyes Laughing

Gaming performance increased? Maybe it's true for Geforce 8 and higher cards. I used Vista for almost half a year and I constantly noticed slower performance in some games.
Crysis and Mass Effect for example. I don't think my hardware is old enough to cause that:
7900gs, c2d 6300, 2gig ram.
So for now I'm back using XP.

Soon I'll upgrade to 4870 and I'll try again.
