thought i'd reinstall this since I rebuilt my system last summer.
Core 2 duo 2.4 ghz
2 GB ram
windows xp
SB X-fi gamer
Geforce 8800 GTX
constant crashing. Crashed 3 times before I could make a character since then I can't get out of the first cell it just keeps crashing. Furthest I've gotten is them walking in to the cell.
The error message being sent seems to indicate an audio issue, but the x-fi drivers have been updated.

Update the game !
Oh, and change the sound options. Maybe disable hardware acceleration ?
Also take a look at this guide:

Maybe you can save the day with some .ini tweaking.

Crossmr this game uses Windows Media Player 11 drivers for audio , strange decision if you ask me , reinstall WMP11 and you should be fine

Also try setting FFDSHOW or similar codec not to work under the game. It's a known issue.

Not sure why your all having these issues, I didn't need to reinstall a thing, even after just doing a format last week and reinstalling vista 32bit, its running almost perfectly here. The only problem I do have, as so many others do, is the blackout bug when using HDR. It needs to be disabled or at certain views your screen will go black until you move around out of that current lighting.
I did do some extra tweaking to make it look nicer but it runs great here, running the latest game patch with audigy & alchemy.

Would that be a fan made patch or the crappy Bethesda effort?

It would be the latest patch on GameShadow that I have used which is:
4,423,032 oblivion_vnnn_v120.exe
No player made patches at all. I only have problems with HDR and my 8800GTS as does everyone else, its still playable in HDR but annoying so I just turn it off. Ran it on a dual and quad core now and its fine here. I have installed the expansion pack as well now and its working fine too.
edit:
Just a thought but since your running x-fi and its stating its an audio issue, try disabling the ALchemy completely and see what happens. This was a MAJOR problem with people and vista bitching about Hitman Blood Money always crashing on the 3rd mission since the last patch. Really people should have seen the openal support in that patch and the conflict.

It was patched. It was actually an audio decoder from arcsoft (some software I got with my video camera) that was causing the issue. Once I renamed the codec because I couldn't seem to find it in the codec list to disable, the game ran fine.
File was asaudio.ax in case anyone else ever has a problem
