I feel your pain, I do these all the time, and somehow they never seem to get any easier.

It ain't generally legal here either, but firemen can do it because of special permission. And then there's the nice fact of 3 days off after each shift.
2 words.. Fuck, that. Im on from 6PM -> 12 tonight, not so bad Its just fridays and some saturdays when I have to work lame hours, even if the bar is empty, on a saturday I still have to stay the full shift. So for example I arrive at 12 and theres maybe 2-3 guys at the bar ordering 1 drink every 30 mins.. so boring
