It's story time! Pull up a chair.....

For about a week now I've been having major packet-loss, roughly 20-60%.

Not wanting to spend 20 minutes waiting in a phone queue, I went on their online tech support chat and was assisted by someone by the name of Duc, most definitely from Bombay.

In the most generic, canned, out of the book response he let me know that they were "getting weak signals from my modem". Fine said I, and scheduled a tech to come out Thursday Mar. 27 from 11am-2pm.

Thursday rolls around, and as prompt as a fucking Frenchman running towards the front lines, the "technician" shows up at 1:58pm. Failing to introduce himself, nor wearing any sort of name tag, he walks in and asks what the problem is.

Well, said I, I'm getting tons of packet-loss. He looks me straight in the eye and says, "Packet loss?" Yea, packet loss. You know what that is right? "Sure, sure" he says, trying to quickly cover up his blatant fucking ignorance on the topic.

Then, Mr. Technician attempts to pull up my modem diagnostic page, which he fails at miserably. After watching him struggle for a good 5 minutes or so I, being the jolly fucking customer and all around good person that I am, pull it up for him.

"Well..." says he, "your modem specs are all messed up". He proceeds to walk outside and tinker with the box out near the pole a bit, while I watched some TV (satellite mind you, cable blows). After about half an hour he comes back in and calls his "boss", forwarding some measurements he had apparently taken.

I ask him if the problem is indeed at the main box out near the pole and he says "Yep, I've let my boss know and we'll be sending a "line tech" out anywhere from 24-48 hrs, after which you'll be good to go". Fine says I.

Today, (Saturday) rolls around and at about 2pm while I was in the shower my cable goes out for about 15 minutes or so. Apparently the "line techs" did their thing. Sure enough, packet loss was, gasp, consistently 0%...........................for about 30 minutes, after which it was back up to 40%.

What an efficient and well oiled machine the modern customer service / cable company has become. It only took them 4 fucking days to come out, misdiagnose the problem, and fix said misdiagnosed problem. Amazing.

Yet when it comes time to pay for the "service" they bill me a month in fucking advance. Funny how the bill is never 4 days late....

My modem is a Toshiba PCX2200.

Here's a link to the tech-specs on it: http://www.toshiba.com/taisnpd/products/pcx2200_techspecs.html

Here's a screen shot of my diagnostic page:
http://img124.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=54507_modemdiagnostic2_122_665lo.jpg

According to the spec sheet, its actual in range (albeit maximum).

Here's a screen shot of a 20 ping test to Yahoo:
http://img186.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=55403_yahooping_122_252lo.JPG

And the trace route to go along with it:
http://img220.imagevenue.com/view.php?image=55415_yahootracert_122_21lo.JPG

Any ideas? The modem is fucking fine, if it wasn't I wouldn't of had that brief half hour of 0% PL. Likewise, I doubt its a problem on the tap either.

I just need to get in touch with someone who: A. Speaks real fucking English not read out of a manual and B. Someone who knows what fucking packetloss is to begin with. Their phone support just doesn't cut it.

if you'd read torrentfreak.com, then you'd know that comcast is famous for throttling p2p traffic and other things (though they promised some co-work with BitTorrent)

I have no peer to peer traffic. At all. Zero.

They're going to have to throttle my fuckin boot up their ass if they don't get this shit sorted.

Just for the sake of curiosity, what is your maximum DL speed on comcast? On average; don't give me the inflated figures a download starts out with.

As for the packet loss... I have that prob with Comcast from time to time... but it usually only happens for like a day, and then goes away.

With the groups and 8 connections open I max my line speed at 6Mbps.
As for on the web - I'd say about 400-500 KB per sec. However, if I use Flashget and open up more connections I can usually max my line speed.

I pay $60 a month for 6Mbps....that rate seems way fucking inflated to me.
They also have an 8Mbps plan for for $70 or so.

As for uncapping the modem, I don't think that'd help me much with the packet loss. And it'd probably draw more attention than I'd want. But for fucks sake, I can't even game online anymore the rubberbanding is so bad. Just getting to websites is a chore.

Resetting the modem with a hidden button? There isn't one on mine. Simply unplug the power cable from it for a minute or two will reset it, unless I'm missing something.

G0tgot - ask your dad what the number is for the second teir of tech support. I need to talk to someone who actually speaks fucking English. An engineer or admin or something. Perty please.

damn comcast suck!

on my isp ive had the signal levels go dodgy a few times phone support always sends a tech guy out and i usually have the modem page on the screen waiting for them, they look at the page for a few seconds before reaching into there bag and taking a signal analyser device out which they attack to the cable that goes to my modem. then they phone a network engineer to alter the signals and the engineer is nearly always the same day within a few hours.

but i can also log into my ISP's newsgroup server and they have a tech support binary on there where you can just post tracerts and your modem signal levels, there smart enough to see when the levels are out of spec and they skip the tech guys and just book an engineer right away Very Happy

Called them again today.
The bitch notified me that there was an outage in my area, with no ETA as to a fix.
I asked her if she could forward me to somebody that would know approximately when.
She said she could forward me to dispatch but even they don't know.
"So nobody in the company knows when its going to be up?" I asked. "No" she replied.

What kind of a fucking joke is this?

I'm going to write them a letter instead of returning the next bill. "I don't know when I'll have the time to pay you".

Fucking cunts.

Then you don't know much. I know alot of people who has it too.

Example:

Bredbandsbolaget 100mbit, costs about 55 dollars a month. No, not everyone can get it, but many can. Almost everyone can get 24 mbits though.

Don't they put some weird limits on it though?

Max download 2GB during the day or something like that then they throttle your speed way down.

I dunno - could have sworn i heard something like that.
