First link doesn't work. The second is fine, but who the hell buys AMD CPU for his laptop? They overheat too much and waste battery time.

gaming is out of the question anyway with those integrated graphics but you should definitely get something with 2gb ram or more.

1gb is just a pain nowadays.

Dell laptops aren't bad either. They are also among the few that actually give you everything on DVDs instead on the shitty recovery partition that takes 20gb out of your small as it is 120GB hard disk.

^agree, but its all we buy at the main section at work. So its kinda HP against Dell all the time. Id say their laptops are better but maybe a bit overpriced.

Acer is bad. If anyone thinks an HP, Emachine, Compaq or Acer is just fine and dandy then they shouldn't be recommending anything to anyone.

Theres a reason their all cheap.

you never seem to get it or drop it that I'm not buying anything Intel. I don't shop at Wal*Mart and I don't buy Intel. End of story.

I've got this computer for gaming Wink I never understood the point of gaming on a laptop.

Two very similar notebooks there. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if some of the components were from the same manufacturers. The dell though has the 2GB memory and if as Leo says, you do get a dvd with the os and other progs on it, then that's another plus for it. And it's not just about eating up the hd, but all the crap that gets installed if you have only a recovery cd. I know you won't like that Spykez.

And the first link works btw if you just fill in some us postcode.

Cheap brands are often just as good as quality brands when it comes to laptops. 1-2 years warranty too Wink Dell doesn't make their own LCD panels afaik...

Iv recommended Acer Aspire to 3 different people who also bought them... both them and me are still happy with it. Fast, good looking and integrated webcam Very Happy

Weeeeeeeeee a laptop thread. Time to hijack it Very Happy

So, my ass is getting shipped to a college soon, and my parents labor under the delusion that I just might become a good student for once in my life if I did not have easy access to a gaming PC. However, they are ok with me getting a laptop to take to college, since how can one survive in college without a laptop? Rolling Eyes

Anyways, was thinking about getting one of these:
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Xplorer_X5-C90S_Pro_Notebook/#configurator_top

But,
a) its cyberpower
b) are those graphics integrated?
c) it's too flashy and nice looking. Good chance it will get stolen.

I need some medium gaming laptop to play my fav games decently (they're 2006-2007ish, nothing state of the art), and it shouldn't be too nice looking (otherwise... its gonna get stolen in less than 10 flat). Money is coming out of my own pocket, so spending limit is at $1.6k.

Suggestions?

Concerning Spykez:
Go for the Dell. I'm typing this off of a friend's Toshiba right now; worst POS ever. They pump it so full of crapware, along with Vista, that even explorer lags to the point of uselessnes. Plus, there are battery issues with a shitload of Toshiba laptops, and their customer service is the most hostile bunch of morons I've come across in a long time. Furthermore, the Wireless card (Toshiba partnered with some crap wireless company, I forget their name, starts with an 'A') will randomly die out on you. I'm not saying it might die randomly, it will. It's a simple fact of life that all Toshiba wireless cards are the most retarded things ever conceived by mankind after the retractable dildo that painfully pinches the walls of your anus after you shove it up your ass.

Finally, if you do chose to get this laptop, and install XP on it, good fucking luck with the drivers for the integrated ATI card. If I remember correctly, the links for the drivers were dead on the ATI page, so I had to tell XP to go online and find some. Those drivers, in turn, had a fuckload of issues that made me want to murder the ATI team with a spoon.

As for Dell, they're a meh company. Customer support is nothing special, I once requested a windows XP recovery CD from them, and read off the serial number of the laptop, some number on my warranty, and the CD came 4 days later in the mail. My friends use the Inspiron too, no complaints for non-gaming stuff (they mostly stick to coding etc etc...). Windows XP installs on it without a problem.

So, I would go with the Dell laptop. Fuck Toshiba. Fuck em in their squiggly littler fatherless tight oriental asses.

Yeah, definitely looks interesting. Does it also lock the hard drive?

As for the laptop situation, here's how it is:
My parents weren't born yesterday, so they realize that I'll prolly try to sneak something with a nice GFX card past them. Thus, the laptop I'm gonna be buying can't be labeled as "gaming laptop", or anything entertainment wise for that matter. What I need is a laptop that doesn't brag about its graphics capabilities, and yet is still decent for gaming. Only thing I have found fitting in that category so far is this:

A305-S6845
A305-S6839 (on the bottom of the page)
http://explore.toshiba.com/laptops/satellite/A300

Although I think they might notice under others how it says mobility Radeon (like I said, they both weren't born yesterday. Sometimes I wish they were :S ). Oh, and I fucking hate Toshiba. Oh, and I fucking hate ATI. Esp. ATI mobility.

I would just buy something with my own money, but my bank account is linked to theirs, so they see all the transactions I make. They won't watch $1.6k go to Cyberpower without asking some questions :S So, deception it is Sad

First, explain to them that there are wide ranges in Mobility Radeons and GeForces, starting from basic integrated chips to almost as good as my 8800GTX. They won't believe you. Now, your best chance is this: MXM (Mobile PCIe Module). What you want is getting a mobo with MXM-ii or MXM-iii and replacing the video card that came with the laptop with a brand new one (by yourself, without your parents knowing).

Table of motherboards supporting MXM ports: http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/Table.html

So what you have to do, is buy a laptop with a great CPU ("oh, I need it for my studies mom"), much ram ("so I could open Excel and Word together, dad") and a shit graphics card WHICH IS NOT INTEGRATED ("see mom and dad? i won't be playing"), and later buy a good card to go with the good laptop.
