Doom 4

  • Official web page: LINK
  • Publisher: Bethesda
  • Developer: ID Software
  • Possible Screens: LINK
  • Genre: Action/Horror/FPS
  • Release date: Probably 2012-2013
  • Description:

Quote:

The game will most likely be either a remake of one of the original Doom games or a prequel to Doom 3. It was announced as in production on May 7, 2008,after John Carmack hinted at it at QuakeCon on August 3, 2007.

id's CEO (Todd Hollenshead) suggested that, like Doom 2, it will take place on Earth, and will feature gameplay more akin to the original Doom games rather than the horror styled gameplay of Doom 3.

On August 1, 2008, John Carmack, the co-founder and technical director of id Software said that Doom 4 will look three times better than Rage does, as it runs at 30 frames per second, on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, rather than 60 that Rage targets. In Windows, Doom 4 will run at 60 frames per second with state-of-the-art hardware. In 2009 he revealed that the multiplayer component is being developed separately and will run at 60 frames per second.

On April 10, 2009 GameSpot published an interview with id Software's CEO Todd Hollenshead in which he revealed that Doom 4 was "deep in development." He stated however that the game was "not [in] pre-production". The development team is "relatively new" and id is "still actually hiring people" onto the Doom 4 team. GameSpot asked Hollenshead if Doom 4 would be "a sequel? A reboot? A prequel?" and his response was "It's not a sequel to Doom 3, but it's not a reboot either. Doom 3 was sort of a reboot. It's a little bit different than those."

On June 23, 2009, ZeniMax Media, best known for Bethesda Softworks, acquired id Software and announced that all future id Software games will be published by Bethesda Softworks, Doom 4 being one (in addition to Rage and future Quake titles).

During QuakeCon 2009, Hollenshead announced that there would not be any news released for Doom 4 until the next QuakeCon in 2010. But during the beginning of QuakeCon 2010 Hollenshead said the development team was not ready to give a demonstration on the game. Tim Willits did however talk to the press in May 2010 to boast that "it'll be even more awesome than Rage."

In a 2009 interview, actor Brad Hawkins said "I do know we are dealing with a post war/post apocalyptic event that civilians and military are fighting for their survival."

id Software's technical guru John Carmack has told OPM UK anyone expecting to wait a long time for Doom 4 will have a shorter wait than first thought. Carmack told the magazine that the shooter should not take as long to get out the door, unlike Rage, which was announced in 2007 at QuakeCon, and later released in October 2011.

At E3 2011, John Carmack was interviewed with GameSpot and mentioned that "as soon as Rage ships, the core tech team moves over to start making things happen on the Doom 4 project." In addition, Carmack said that Doom 4, with regards to consoles, will run at 30 frame/s for single player and 60 frame/s in multiplayer, stating that "you can't have 30 guys crawling all over you at 60 frames per second at this graphics technology level because it's painful. -- So [in single player] we can have 30 demons crawling all over you on there."

At QuakeCon 2011, John Carmack said that "there is really not any news" on Doom 4 and that he wanted to devote this year solely to Rage. He also mentioned that Doom 4 will be using a new scripting language that is based on C++ and called it "super-script". This so called "super-script" is a subset of C++ with features like "scheduling", "full performance" and "type safety". Carmack added that once Rage ships, its development team will move to Doom 4 – to speed up on that project. Doom 4 might also feature dedicated servers unlike Rage.

On 28th February 2012, some screenshots have been released on Official Xbox Magzine uk's website, Published by AGB, the screens show urban environments that range from the merely shabby and depopulated to the outright blown-to-pieces.

Seems like they just keep remaking the original games. Can we get something new, is that so hard to ask?

I don't care if it's original or not... just as long as they ditch that fucking flashlight-gun-flashlight-gun mentality. Doom3 wasn't scary, it was annoying.

Oh don't get me wrong, I LOVED the game itself. It was jaw-dropping when it first came out and was great fun to play ... until you hit a dark area (read: 90% of the game after the opening sequence) then it just lost all fun for me :\

Good. I loved Doom 3 despite what people thought of it, and if it's exactly like D3, I will love D4 as well.

Didnt like doom 3 to much. found it bland and repetitive.

If they go back and remake the original doom game, that would be cool. I'd definetly buy that.

Meet "Classic Doom 3" - http://doom3.filefront.com/file/;66871

Freaking awesome TC, shame the devs only did the first episode (Knee Deep In The Dead) because they couldn't continue funding the project. They asked for sponsors to help, but nobody came forward, so they quit.

A truly amazing mod wasted.

They should forget about the whole scare factor part.

Doom for me was always about being a lone space marine kicking demon ass. So the game should focus on that and not on cheap scare tactics.

It should play kinda like Painkiller, but not as boring.

Hope this one improves on level design. D3 was good, but those corridors were looking waaay to similar.

Oh please no generic run and gun, that was fun for back in the day with Doom1/2 but it wont cut it for today's standarts. Painkiller was so bleeding boring because it had nothing to it but waes after waves of enemies running at you. The new Doom is about scares and D3 did a great job at that!

Oh God.

Well, as long as it's not Koch Media or EA .. it won't matter, it'll be something less-intrusive and easily crackable Razz

No that was Doom 3's failure in my opinion. I mean what was the point of having a visually impressive engine when all you're staring at for the entire game is the dark?

So no, the flashlight, gun, flashlight, gun, fleshlight, rubber dick, fleshlight game play was pretty boring. And so was the whole PDA reading in order to understand the plot or even open up lockers.

I mean you're a lone space marine in a station filled with demons. You don't have time to be reading PDA's just to open up a locker so you can get a weapon to blast away demons.

And as I mentioned the game is to made not as boring as Painkiller. It doesn't need to as fastpaced, but the whole concept should still be about surviving and kicking ass. No need to clear an entire level of demons, and pretty much like the old games, you could just avoid the mob of 30 or so demons and exit the level.

Didn't id say a little while back that they were going to stop development on the PC.. or at least the PC wouldn't be their primary focus anymore?.

Look forward to seeing another doom, hopefully it won't be a console port!.

For me D3 was the most boring shit I played in a while.. couldn't care less about top notch gfx, they're nice and all but nothing beats a great storyline and gameplay.

I found this comment which if it's true would be quite interesting.

Quote:

So since Doom 3 was essentially a remake of Doom 1, I'm expecting Doom 4 will essentially be a remake of Doom 2... which Hollenshead himself seems to be bluntly hinting at, with the comment: "DOOM is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth."

Doom 2's events took place on Earth, with Hell's minions invading the planet and ravaging the entire world. So if Doom 4's plot will indeed be based on that premise, the fourth game should be a far more ambitious undertaking than Doom 3 was, both in terms of gameplay and the graphics. Doom 2 largely consisted of levels based on sprawling and wide-open urban environments like cities and such, and so recreating that in Doom 4 would obviously present a sharp contrast to the sort of levels Doom 3's gameplay was situated in.

Would be fun to go back an kill that super-demon. Smile
(And the guy stuck inside it, lots of funny little secrets like that in older titles.)

Well if they remade Doom 2, I'm for it. So long as earth in the future isn't made up of poorly lit corridor cities.

Game should have loads of sunshine to show us the demon ravaged planet.
