I'm about 12 minutes in to the inf blu ray rip, and the police have just turned up in the woods. They're talking alot of german, and there is no english subtitles. Is this normal, or is there a problem with this release or maybe my player...?

orrrrrrrrrrrrr you could just download the .sub file from a dvdrip and see if the 'missing' subs are in there... if they arent, then you are not supposed to know whats being said. tis usually how i do it if im concerned my subs are missing some lines of dialogue.

there are like 10 sentences of german... and i think you get the point, no? They shoot some people, thats all. There is no german in the rest of the movie, just skip the german part... and enjoy the rest.

I had a sub file with german text when it was german spoken, not very useful either

And i think there is another part where the cops come to the home and he gives them a bottle of wodka. And then they say "bribing a cop?" and he says "yes" and the cop says "ok, behave"

the german is not important, the movie is obvious enough to understand what is going on...

I have the infamous release, but although there are english subtitles they are for everything english and non-english.

a quick google using the release name and you will find subs for just non-english parts Smile

there are actually quite a few non-english parts (non just german but russian, including all dialogue between the brothers and the red army) so they are quite important Smile

Defiance.1080p.BluRay.x264-HD1080 has subtitles for everything. What you see in the first two minutes is in german subtitles tho, other than that everything is perfect.

An OK movie I thought, but annoying that they speak practically 95% english in wannabe-russian accent, instead of the language itself. As seen in a few scenes, Daniel and Liev does manage to speak it well, at least from what I can tell since I don't speak the language myself.

given you have two releases that have subtitles that you can't see ... perhaps something isn't set up properly?

Not sure what Horrordee is talking about. Defiance.720p.BluRay.x264-iNFAMOUS has english subs.

too bad the ones that come with it are really annoying with all of the descriptions of the action that accompany the dialogue.

as well, I'm curious ... do dvds/blurays of english language movies sold in non-english speaking countries not come with just subs for the non-english parts (I guess they're called 'forced subtitles')?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subtitles#Categories

(I'm assuming a lot of these releases come from non-north american releases, but I wouldn't be surprised if scene retards just can't figure out that these are needed)

Probably there was no subtitles track just for non English parts of the movie on that particular Bluray.

that's why I asked, because any movie sold in n. america has this option Smile

btw, the subtitles that are included in the infamous release are English SDH (Subtitling for Deaf and Heard of Hearing) ... so I'm guessing they maybe chose the wrong subtitle track to include and never gave it a second thought.

It's kind of a gripe of mine, scene x264 releases commonly have some kind of subtitle issue with them (most commonly that they are not included for 100% english movies).

DSH Laughing

'gun firing" "coughing" "door slamming" "car starting" so annoying, distracts you from the movie, all those letters popping up...

Sorry but there is no release with hard coded "proper" subs for only the non-english bits... in fact, most of the releases dont include .srt files either - neither the 720 or 1080p release did...

if someone finds a good non-english bit only sub file, please hola.

subtitles are usually included in the .mkv container, so there is no need for a separate srt file.

also, I already mentioned in one of my previous posts that if you google the release name + subtitles you will find subs for just the non-english parts Wink just download all the english subs you can find and open them in notepad to make sure they aren't for all the dialogue.
