I reinstalled VISTA after the debacle with the firewall issue LINK
Installed 174.74 (beta) as I thought it was the latest etc. Also updated all the VISTA stuff including SP1 etc.

After that I had black screen and freeze after 10-40 min of run time, could happen at any moment, watching a film, gaming or plain surfing no matter what, the screen would go black and after like 10-20 seconds the PC would freeze (I know cause i was listening to radio and I could hear the sound like 10-20 secs after the screen went black)

I read some post on the net about the 174.74 could cause this with the 9800 GX2, so I thought dam, maybe that's it.

Anyho, found that there was a new beta released, GeForce Release 175 BETA April 28, 2008. so far so good, but only been running for 20 min or so ...waiting for a freeze. Someone else had this?

Update, the GeForce Release 175 BETA April 28, 2008, is also unstable Sad
Reverted to "169.25_forceware_winvista_32bit_english_whql"
Been running for more then 5-6 h and no black screen!
I guess NV needs to fix this, or MS has to...either way it sucks.

Have you used driver cleaner or tried to reinstall the mobo drivers, etc?
No problem here with 174.74, 8800GT & vista sp1 x64...

I might give that a go later. Working from home this weekend and I need the PC, can't have it shut down on me in the middle of some Photoshop work etc.
Cheers guys!

And another thing!...spilled a full glass of Vodka straight in to my G15 Keyboard Sad.
Dead as a Dodo. Thought it would dry/clear up a bit till this morning but no go. So I had to go up in to the attic to get a old Logitech one...dam are the keys LOUD!

Tried all of the above and still get random black screen/freezes. Maybe its my gracard that don't like the new drivers or something. When running 169.25 all is stable and as it should.

I am pretty sure its not a temp issue. Running Everest so I am monitoring all important temps including the GPU, all seems to run at normal temps here. The other reason is that I don't get this "black screen/freeze" using the latest 169.25 WHQL, it is the latest although from Dec 20 2007. But it runs stable.

Been digging a bit on Nvidia's Forum and found this thread.
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=65161
If it is due to other hardware as said in that post, the only thing I can think of is my Ram, 2Gb OCZ FlexXLC...but I sort a fail to see why they would cause it. I also tried to run with ALL HW @ stock settings (no OC!) but same thing happens, screen flickers, 5 sec later it goes black and then the PC freezes.

i had something simular, my PSU died a few days later, new one fixed it.

But for me it went this way , screen freezes , 5 secs later"memory" artifacting, then black screen.

Hm. Well its a weird one for sure, as all seems to work flawlessly using that WHQL driver. I will dig some more in that NV forum and see what i can come up with.

If its the PSU, well then I will notice it sooner or later

EDIT: Where would I see the error log for the GPU in VISTA. I checked the Event Log, but I don't see anything related to this problem.

EDIT II: A lot of peeps over at the NV forums seems to have the same issues with TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) and beta drivers, posted in the latest thread talking about this issue.

In my experience the nvidia's TDR in Vista were mostly related to hardware overheating. Hopefully a new set of stable drivers will fix your problem mate.

Cheers, also checking if there is a RAM prob. I can only run my FlexXLC in "Single Channel" at the mo
Quote:
I can only run my 2 Gb FlexXLC in single channel on my ASUS Rampage Formula. Basically using the 2 (blue 2A/white 2B) furthest slots from the CPU. If I try to run Dual Channel white 1A/white 1B or blue 2A/blue 2B the system will just sit on "DET DRAM".

Also tried to run with only one module in the slots closest to the CPU (channels 1A/1B)
But don't mater, will only sit at "DET DRAM" not posting. It seems that the only channels working are the 2A/2B.

Posted in OCZ's forum as well as in Nvidia's and Asus's

So far looks like I have to RMA my 2nd rampage board Sad

It works, but only running the rams in the 2A/2B slots.

Anyho...working on it. Might not be related...but again could be...who knows .

Seems that all drivers prior to 174/5xxx works for some reason. Running 169.44_forceware_winvista_32bit_english_beta at the mo, no issues, thats the latest 169 Beta.

Was reading in EVGA's forum and a lot of ppl have this Black Screen Freeze problem, and many say that the 175xxx drivers are causing it.

I also read that the OEM BIOS loader for VISTA might cause this, but that I don't really believe.

After installing the latest beta 175.16 everything sort a works. I say sort a cause I still have that faint flicker of the screen, but it always recovers Had a black screen crash when trying to open some small app, opened sys manager and everything froze, and black screen, hard boot.

Oh well will run it some more and it's the same thing...flicker and goes black and hard bot. But at least it don't go black every 20 min or so. Basically no diff, only thought so at first. It could be that i am currently running 2Gb in single channel, but that's a wild stab in the dark. Will get another set of 2x1200 FlexCLXlater next week, that should at least clear the RAM/Single Chan issue.

Still no error message in event viewer that could help track your problem? Confused
I guess that you will have to stick with the 169.25 ones for now.
