Round Christmas I bought the best parts I could afford to upgrade my temporary AMD 4200+, 7600GT, but the problem was when I first started using it the AMD 6400+ Black Edition kept beeping, I looked into it and it meant the CPU was overheating, this was whenever I did anything even listening to music so I bought thermal grease and started replacing it once a day just to be sure it was working but the problem still remained so I bought a Zalman 9700 LED (was using OEM from 4200+ since 6400+ doesn't come with one) and it was all fine...except the fact I can't use first bank of RAM because the fans too bloody big, but just now I was listening to music on WMP and playing FlatOut 2, just starting Career with all settings on high, using uTorrent and Mozilla and it started beeping again so I checked Everest and it said the temp was 75 degrees, 9700s been on max since I got it so I KNOW its not that, any ideas?

EDIT: Doing nothing but watching an .avi on VLC has CPU temps of 50 degrees approx.
Forgot to mention, no OCing going on.
After posting this I replaced the thermal paste, when I had stock I used Arctic Silver 5 now I use Zalman Super Thermal Grease that came with the 9700, the temp went down 10 degrees or so but is still a bit high imo and is almost overheating again.
Yup just playing FlatOut 2 with music in the background then BOOM, went slow then shut down, checked the 9700 and it was hot as.

System:
AMD 6400+ Black Edition
Leadtek Winfast 8800GT
abit AN-2MHD (Regretted buying this, avoiding abit in future)
Corsair XMS2 5-5-5-12 2x1GB (In second bank since first slot is taken up by the CPU fan and now I can't get it to dual channel Sad and always comes up as 1750MB or so in Control Panel>System )

How did you apply the thermal paste? Did you clean what was there before applying new paste for the 9700?

you sure the heatsink is properly in place and making good contact?

only thing i can think of unless your using to much thermal paste

After double checking that your heatsink is correctly installed, is your case well ventilated too?

The idle temp of a 6400+ should be something around 30-35°C and you wanna stay below 60°C under load (the max ambient case temp specified by AMD is between 55-63°C).

Its usually on overnight and what not for downloading but since the overheating I've left it off and used my dads to download which has a crappy Sempron, the heatsink is put on properly, cut my hands on the copper fins while trying to get it on then figured the correct way after and it was fine ever since, only recently has it been bothering me and the case is a Thermaltake Xaser II so its not much in the way of flashy, but the motherboard is constantly at 25 degrees o.o

have your felt the heatsink when its overheating to see how hot it is? maybe try updating your bios to see if its reporting wrong temps and there was a fix. maybe its not really overheating at all

barely anything comes up for your board with a google search lol about 5 relevant searchs

that some wierd crack at me? its not that uncommon for a motherboards sensors to be showing temps that are off by quite a margin before a bios update, usually only happens if you get a board with one of the first few bioses.

if the heatsink is attached to the cpu properly and theres the right amount of thermal paste on there then its the only other thing that could cause whacky cpu temps.

no harming in seeing if the heatsink actually gets quite warm and to check the motherboards bios updates.

just trying to cover everything there isnt really that many reasons why his cpu would overheat

was my remark a crack at you? no, it was directed to Juba. cause no one in his opinion refers to computers as cpu

It was hot at the time, I had left it on for 2 days straight encoding overnight, now that I hardly leave it on long it doesn't do it but I think I'll just use the 6400+ as a storage comp and get a bloody intel.

P.S. Sorry I miss spelled it, its the AN-M2HD
http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/motherboard/motherboard_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=AN-M2HD&fMTYPE=Socket%20AM2

EDIT: Only seems to overheat on Flatout 2 so not too bothered anymore really, the heatsink was hot when it crashed, anyway thanks for your contributions.

It could be your gfx card that is over-heating because most processors, when they overheat, shut down instantaneously without any slow-down as you describe. Like a power outage.

The CPU didn't come with a OEM fan and I wasn't sure how to apply thermal paste properly so it was overheating from the thermal paste most likely but I bought a 9700 just to be sure and for the possibility of OCing in future but now I doubt it.

Quote:
High frequency beeeps while running Overheated CPU Check the CPU fan for proper operation. Check the case for proper air flow.

Pretty sure that was it because it was annoying as hell.

As for graphics card I haven't really had any problems with it...apart from PSU not being powerful enough so I ditched the 430W Thermaltake for a 550W Coolermaster (Molex are annoying since they are tougher to pull out) and the BSODs which I'm assuming were because I keep on forgetting to disable the integrated one (nVIDIA GeForce 7050 PV), temperatures seem fine.
