|
 |
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/52841
Quote: | At yesterday's Wedbush Morgan Securities conference, Atari founder Nolan Bushnell claimed that a stealth encryption chip will "absolutely stop piracy of [PC] gameplay."
"There is a stealth encryption chip called a TPM that is going on the motherboards of most of the computers that are coming out now," explained Bushnell, according to a GamesIndustry report. |

Why would the MB manufactures do that? They don't give a fuck about piracy.

They will probably get a part of the cake from game publishers.

But then you cant play the games that require the chip and blablabla. But still nothing is ever crack-proof so who cares.

Hasn't the DRM chip been rumoured for years now?
I thought they dumped the idea as they realised it would alienate PC owners too much and send everyone running to AMD?
TPM however is a seperate thing, I think that's what bitlocker etc uses.

probably be about 5 years before any developer made games that NEEDED the chip to be able to play and then i doubt it would work.

Anything that computes can be altered and hacked. The chip will prove useless with a simple flash. Piracy is already a wheel in motion its not going to just suddenly stop. The strongest thing against piracy would be fair wages the working class and a strong economy. More people that can afford the game will buy the game its that simple. I know I would and have in the past.

dont get me wrong i support the good game developers with my cash but the ones who want to restrict how many times u can install a copy of a game or needs activation etc which is pretty much renting a game rather than buying it can suck my balls!

For trying to stop people stealing from 'em?
Dumb mother fucker.
I'm not being heavy on piracy, I do it myself, but ffs people stop trying to be all high and moral etc.
It's stealing plain and simple.
If you can't face that you're a thief instead of looking for justifications stop bladdy stealing.
If everyone stopped stealoing they'd stop with the heavy protection. Shops search bags these days. That's intrusive. That's annoying. But do you see shoplifters joining up to use it as justification and suddenly act like they're not really thiefs?

Do these idiots actualy think pc games are the only thing that gets pirated, what about all the consols, if they want to stop piracy forget paying to get the things protected in the first place then put that money into the profit margin, then sell the games for a resonable price $20 - $30 max.

Since when is piracy theft? I'm not taking anything that I wouldn't have bought myself anyway and I'm not denying a product that I wouldn't have bought anyway.
Since when have shops searched bags. Any security guard that stopped me and tried to search my bag would learn the hard way through the courts that stopping a customer to search is illegal. Well it is here anyway. Security has no more rights to stop people than the common man and they're certainly not allowed to search you.

it's a propaganda story, because Bushnell is on the Board of Directors at Wave Systems (which makes compatible software for TPM).

Making such a chip mandatory is just not possible with the way the PC hardware market works. Plus, it would destroy what little the PC gaming market has left.

What she said!
If you had no intention of purchasing the legit product in the first place then how the hell have they lost revenue?
Lets imagine piracy has never existed and it was absolutely impossible to pirate any game/app on any platform? then I for one, and I suspect many thousands of others would never have bought a PC or any games consoles..

Come say that to a moron guard here in IL. He'll be calling the police faster than you'd be able to say "Jack Nicholson."

Well the security here is citizens arrest which means they're basically civilians. They're not allowed to search you. If one tried to search me then I'd be the one calling the police.

I think it's the same here, but if you resist, the police will be asking "what do you have to hide?"
Don't you know Jenni, here, like in the US, if you want privacy or human rights, you have something to hide!

and it would be emulated within a month... or someone would figure out how to replace the code and make the game/program run without it, this sounds fucking silly if you ask me
bold statements about "100% foolproof" tends to bring out the guys that are actually smart for real

Games just aren't worth €/$/£ 50+ anymore these days. Sure, they're full of eye candy and all, but which games actually last longer than an afternoon session nowadays? Once you played them through, you're done, no need to go back. What do I care about Hardcore/Elite/etc. modes if it's basically just the same again with harder mobs?
And with the PC market being flooded with cheap console ports, there's even less reason for a PC owner to buy games if they don't have a gamepad or simply don't like using it.
Then we have this new trend of "episodic releases", like with the Sam&Max games. If you combine all 6 episodes of a season, you have barely more than an early Leisure Suit Larry or Quest game in terms of length and story. But would you pay 100-120 bucks for this? I wouldn't...
So as long as the game developers don't make a 180° turn and go back towards making games which will have a lasting enjoyment effect, piracy won't go away. In fact, it'll never go away, but it might diminish again, somewhat. But as long as they only make games that ADD cripples enjoy, nothing will change, no copy protection, no chip, etc.

You end up with something which you obtained illegally without paying. That is theft. plain and simple. To say you wouldn;t have got it otherwise doesn;t matter.
If a teenage girl wouldn't buy Rimmel but lifts it anyway, that's theft.
It may not be a physical thing, but theft it still is.
And maybe it's different in the US, but in Oz all shops have signs saying it's a condition of entry that you allow guards to check your bags on exit.
Hey, I know it's not the popular done thing to see reality rather than romantic view, but I'm a thief, as is anyone else who illegally obtains software.
