Quote:
Speaking at yesterday's Wedbush Morgan Securities annual Management Access Conference, the Atari founder suggested that game piracy will soon be a thing of the past thanks to a new chip.

"There is a stealth encryption chip called a TPM that is going on the motherboards of most of the computers that are coming out now," he pointed out.

"What that says is that in the games business we will be able to encrypt with an absolutely verifiable private key in the encryption world - which is uncrackable by people on the internet and by giving away passwords - which will allow for a huge market to develop in some of the areas where piracy has been a real problem."

Bushnell thinks that piracy of movies and music, however, is probably unstoppable because "if you can watch it and you can hear it, you can copy it."

"Games are a different thing, because games are so integrated with the code. The TPM will, in fact, absolutely stop piracy of gameplay.

"As soon as the installed base of the TPM hardware chip gets large enough, we will start to see revenues coming from Asia and India at a time when before it didn't make sense."

Either way its still can be hacked/cracked/modded, but the more effort people have to put in, the more it costs, the more warranties have to be voided (so the more barriers they put), the less people will think it's worth it.

TPM chips are already available, all business notebooks for example have one. Intel is also planning to integrate the TPM chip on the CPU die.

i like when people say that something will 'absolutely' happen... they always...sorry... 'usually' (Very Happy) end up looking like complete twats in the end.

well, i don't think anyone can argue that.... i've been on the scene for quite a long time and i heard things like "i'm sure this will do that" so many times i can't even remember. so far, i don't know if someone was right about what they said (as in related to piracy)

and like others people on Nforce said, many people also buy whatever they use as pirated before.

What has a Trusted Platform Module have to do with anti piracy???

The chip needs a digital certificate for the encryption and decryption and where do I get one if I buy a copy of a game from my local retailer?

Or do I have to activate the game via the internet and get my certificate ? How will they check that my certs are authentic if the stuff is encrypted with my private key or I'm offline ?

The certs will be hacked or the TPM will be bypassed easily. It reminds me of some older anti piracy hardware keys which you had to screw into your LPT port if you wanted the software to start. These hardware devices were bypassed in like a couple of days with software emulators always returning "EVERYTHING IS OK - LAUNCH" messages.

Oh well...nothing new in this world...and TPM is used on business laptops for encrypting you hard disk content and not to fight against some kind of software piracy Razz

good points salba Smile

I dont think its possible to enforce all this stuff, they will most likely lose out to companies who can afford to go non-chip and bring in the good games.

I happen to own a laptop with TPM. It's giving me more headache from time to time than I would like, BUT...if someone takes a run with my laptop I only loose my computer...the data is secure Wink

Reinstalling the laptop is a surgical process and god help you if you do not decrypt your hard disk before doing so Razz

The most stupidest thing I've ever did was creating an encrypted backup. And after fully formating my system partition and reinstalling XP I found out that I also formated away my certs Smile What's the point having an encrypted backup without the decrypting cert Wink

Oh...good memories....

If 90% of the game's that come out for the PC weren't complete shit, I suspect they wouldn't have as much of a concern about piracy.
