Im thinking of buying Mass Effect online from Direct2Drive,
does anybody know about this method of purchase?
Will I get a copy for myself if I buy it like this?

You purchase it, and you download it. Simple as that, or, you could torrent it, that'd be alot easier, plus its free.

You buy it.
DL it in a zip or exe.
Unzip, install.
Type in code that is provided on web page.
Play.

But what about patches ? How is the D2D version updated ?

I guess the launcher's autoupdate won't work, since the files are different ? Or aren't they ?

direct2drive will have its own patchs specific to the download version of the game which usually means your 1-2 weeks behind any patches the retail version gets, you will download them through direct2drive.

I am not sure about this one. I read on the official forum that it can be patched with a normal patch. But don't hang me on it.

It depends on the game. If you are talking about Mass Effect, someone from Bioware stated on the official forum, that the D2D version is the same as the DVD version. I think that it is due to the fact that the protection does come fom an authentification online and not from a "hardware check" of the DVD, so the software is the same.
For most other games, the patch is different though.

FYI, i bought the game on EAstore, grabbed the key, downloaded the ISO from a torrent and used the key to install it. Everything is working fine.
