Had a storm a month or so ago that knocked out our power and since then I get the error when starting my computer up. Boot Disk Error, inster system disk. I have to have a windows disk in my drive when starting up to get passed the error.

I'm not really know how on this sort of thing but wouldn't that be a fucked boot sector and isn't it repairable?

/waits for leo

..lol

OK, so pop the disk, start the setup, choose recovery console. The do the following:
fixmbr
fixboot

Should fix it. If it doesn't try this command as well:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/termsb/p/bootcfg.htm

Should fix it as you are not getting any specific file error (usually ntldr)

He said his system boots. So I don't see the point to waste time. Plus, when repairing, often dependencies brake (so programs don't run well or at all) and drivers have to be reinstalled. A mess.

He should try fixing to boot sector and the boot information before resorting to more sever measures. Smile

If I have to do a repair, then soemthing is obviously fucked up, in which case I do the normal whipe everything and start over method.

But everything is smooth running except the boot error. So thanks leo

Try replacing your IDE cable. I had boot disk error earlier this month and reinstalled and everything but that didn't work. Huge headache.

Then I replaced the IDE cable that links the HD to the motherboard for $4 and everything works great.

If you want to test it first, unplug the cable of your cd drive (assuming you have two separate cables) and use it for your HD. See if that gets rid of the error. If it does, then run to your local computer store and pick up a new cable and fix the sucker.

IDE assuming you're using a ATA drive. Don't know why I was thinking PCI.

Nah, I tried those commands before and they didn't do it cause the cable was not being cool. But I guess his problem isn't the cable. I'm out of ideas then.

If your cable isn't cool, you don't boot from the HDD at all, do you? Read SkypeZ' first post.

You do, I had the exact same problem. Boot disk error but as long as I had the XP cd in it boots in. Don't ask me why I don't know. But it was a cable problem for me. Read his post.

try changing the workgroup on all the computers Laughing windows claims it needs to reboot but just ignore that bullshit if thats your problem it will show up and you will be able to access it right away without a reboot.

btw im not suggesting somehow your workgroup name is wrong , i have a problem that sounds like yours and thats how i always make it come back. i swear windows is retarded sometimes

well looks like I'll be reinstalling windows. Even tried to rebuild the boot sector and I still get the error. I got curious and went into my bios to see what my boot order was and changed it to what I normally use and that did nothing :\

I have to have my boot order with cd rom first with my windows disk in the drive to get into windows *sigh*
