I got scared for games in general when I watched the cutscenes in that game.
Fortunatly the delete button reassured me.
OK it wasnt that bad, i just remember going from one sector to the next looking for something to do besides trading...when I found it, it killed me instantly.

X2 was terrible, and what made it even worse was wanting the game to work.
i mean, c'mon, combat was impossible, it was like dogfighting in the Space Shuttle, and it clearly was not intentional. on top of that, no multiplayer, no LAN, and even on a decent to high end system this game played choppy.
we can, however, always hope there will be a Freelancer 2 that adds depth to the universe.

I am totally hooked on EVE online now, I dont think I know of a space game that compares to it.

you know, actually bub ; X2:The Threat was one of the better games I've tried in many years. I actually bought and played the thing for a few weeks and not just a few hours, and I'm not even a sim junkie. The flying was fine, I have to agree on the lack of things to do in such a big world however. That's where mods came into play. The one thing I didn't like were the unintentional bumps into stations and such that basically made them want to kill you, and the fact that the throttle was too sensitive on my joystick.

Phaf. You just didn't bother to really learn to fly the ships. Agreed, the flight model could have used a bit more freedom, a'la Freelancer's afterburner-tactics, but it was still solid. What I liked about X2 was the ability to fly a number of different types of ships, depending on what you want. When you get far enough in the game, controlling your own fleet and network of traders and station is pretty neat.

heh, well, to each his own.
like i said, i wanted the game to work so bad!
i dont know if you tried the tutorials, there was a combat one where you are flying in a (from the cockpit) slick looking figher in an asteroid field. now that looked pretty damn good. but it was troubling when the enemies showed up, and it was impossible to hit them, unless of course they rammed you?!?
graphically, i think X2 had the shadowing going for it, but the special effects were terrible in the game, you must admit! in one sector, there were pitiful dust clouds and the game engine slowed to a crawl. in Freelancer, i recall cruising through dust fields, debris fields, ice clouds, asteroid fields, nebulae, err, damn i think i am going to install it again.
i admit i did not get far enough into X2 to own a battle fleet, but i cannot imagine what you can do with it. on top of it all, you had game forums and patches that were locked down by the facist makers of the game (who else does this?), it is just not worth it. i heard the game was partially ruined by the protection scheme, to prevent piracy. well, my impressions of the game were so low as far as its running that i would never buy it! and i buy all the games i intend to play!
so, anyways, i can see why you may like it, or want to like it, but i just cannot see going thru all that to play it!
peace.

Pleaaase stop covering up for this game. The controls were a piece of crap. Everyone experienced it,and everyone knew of such. From gamers to actual game reviewers. The only thing the game had going for it was simply building up a large base, trading system, etc. But the controls made it absolutely so horrid to play. Maybe they will learn from their previous mistake and actually allow you to remap the controls this time around..no?

Freelancer was a solid, fun game but it was utterly, utterly thin and meaningless - so a sequel with lots more depth but retaining that playablity and clean code would be great.
X and it's sequel are flawed in so many areas it's painful, the concept is admirable and something we all want to work - but it just doesn't achieve this lofty task and only those willing to forgive it's faults and ultimately delude themselves will get any enjoyment from the game.
I hear there is a new Elite in the works anyway?

Well, the controls weren't never an issue for me. I have an excellent flighstick with a lot of programming options, though. When you can map macros to buttons even a bit clumsier interface doesn't matter. I agree that adding mouse control to the menus would have been a good idea and it was easy getting lost into the menu system at times.
But, it was still usable and it's pretty hard to compare it to any other space game since only a few games have ever tried to combine actually flying your ships and commanding a large fleet of stations, fighters and traders at the same time on a strategic scale.
I'm no huge fanboy, I'm not one of the guys who just keep building their empires. After I had completed the plot I did a little something, traded enough money to get a M2 and then M1 class ship. Then I tested them out and had a bit of fun in the hostile sectors, but after that I haven't touched the game. The series shows a lot of promises and X2- The Return could be a good move forward, naturally the basic engine won't change until X3, if they ever make it.
