woow, that's insane. The funny thing is, it is still cheaper for me to go by car than to go by train with a reduction... Thats how 'cheap' public transport is here.

If i go from Ostend -> Ghent (70km), it costs me €4.5 with my reduction, normally €15 Surprised
If i go by car with my 2 brothers, we split costs, it is €3-4, even with these prices.

And i can take my car anytime i want to anywhere i want... This government doesnt understand it. "We raised the price of traintickets because trains were on time this year" (which is not true anyway)... What an idea, that 2mins my train is earlier is worth the extra €1.

here is a solution:

DON'T FUCKING DRIVE. IF YOU HAVE TO DRIVE, FUCKING CARPOOL. IF YOU HAVE TO DRIVE, DRIVE THE FUCKING SPEED LIMIT BECAUSE ENGINES ARE MORE EFFICIENT AT MODERATE SPEEDS! KEEP YOUR CAR TUNED UP! KEEP YOUR TIRES AT THE APPROPRIATE INFLATION! CONSIDER THE BRAKE PEDAL AS A 'WASTED ENERGY TRANSFERENCE PEDAL' SO FUCKING SLOW DOWN BEFORE THE RED LIGHT (OR DON'T STOP FOR STOP SIGNS), DRAFT BIG TRUCKS ON THE HIGHWAY TO REDUCE WIND RESISTANCE!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_economy-maximizing_behaviors

You can beat the price increase yourself Smile

just last weekend I drove a 225km x2 round trip ... used to have to refill before I got close to home driving 140km/h all the way ... I tried the trip @ 100km/h and returned home with 3/8 of a tank Smile

that is fucking retarded. if you drive off you rip off the person who owns that gas station and is re-selling the gas they have. :/

only a couple % of profit yield on gas means you lose a lot when the gas is stolen.

£1.99 a litre? that's pathetic. we are at about €1.5/litre "super" over here which is quite the highest price eva.

and to nouse*so-called-solution:

wtf. if you own a car you'll drive it no matter what. speed limit? who cares. wind shield on the highway? bah. as if s.o. would behave like that. no man, thats just whishful-thinking. go get your bicycle instead? no way. maybe the canadians are different Smile let's just face it, no one gives a sh*t.

sad, but true.

you miss my point.

1) do you commute to work? how many people ride in your car? (if you don't work, you're not a part of the population that affects anything.)

2) most cars' fuel efficiency peaks around 70 km/h, losing efficiency (meaning KM:fuel used) by at least 15% by 95 km/h (from that link I posted)

so when you drive 120-140 km/h on the highway (a hobby of mine) you are burning gas like nobody's business. do you understand that now? Wink

and yes I own a car, but live in the city and take the subway + feet to work Smile lots of family I visit outside the city on the weekends though.

All I'm saying is driving behaviour can offset the increase in the price of gas

no, i'm afraid you sir miss my point. if ppl own a car they dun give a shit on efficiancy or fuel prices in the first place. you own some used car? well, let's drive it. it takes 15litres per 100km? well, whatever..

see?

::edit:: dun get me wrong here, a hybrid is nonetheless better and stuff. but ppl who use to own a car dun give a shit. they might be upset about high fuel prices, but in the end they swallow any price and go on the usual way ::/edit::

I own a car. A lot of people I know own a car. A lot of people I know commute from the suburbs into a big city every single day to work. Still a lot of us can take public transit into work.

Why don't you stop complaining about the price of gas and just start using it less?

And EVERYBODY cares about efficiency. We have lots of vehicle manufacturing jobs that aren't here anymore because we make inefficient cars here so the big 3 NA car makers are in the toilet.

so shit.

because that's just wishful thinking. nobody who owns a car would say like "oh man that gas cost me too much i'm gonna go to work by train and leave the car in the garage", especially not in the us but neither in the eu. also they don't mind about efficient driving and stuff. if you own a car u wanna drive it.

and by "drive it" i don't necessarly mean driving aroud in some low speed areas Wink

^^ you have to realize that most of the uses of highways and fuel is for business. I'm sorry to tell you mate but you're out of the equation. So all you can do is use less.

I also own a car but gas prices being 30-40% higher makes me use my car less. I guess you're a spoiled rich kid?

no, i'm what you'd call "white-trailer-trash" (lol) and still i prefer my car over anything else that can get me from a -> b. and that is the reality most ppl are used to. how do you explain phenominons like traffic-jams then? as i said wishful-thinking Wink

Exactly. This guy was dragged to death trying to stop a bunch of idiot kids who stole a small amount of gas. Grant DePatie. We have a law now where you have to pay first before you fill up.

cnZ, I assume you are joking.

Some employers are such assholes to their employees and hold their employees responsible for gas & dash.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2006/01/10/bc_depatie20060119.html

Aparently gas siphoning is on the rise. I haven't been hit yet and I don't have a locking gas cap (yet) , I have to pop the cover from inside my car. Reminds me of the trailer park ep. where Cory and Trever are going around stealing gas.

@nouse
I remember reading that a few people have died as a result of trying to draft the big trucks. Bad trend. Althou I used (had to) to do it in my hippy van if I wanted to pass an idiot driver on the hwy. By idiot I mean drives like 10 below the speed limit in the curvy sections and speeds up on the straight parts. I fucking hate those drivers. Makes me SOOOO mad.

I know drafting is dangerous Smile You have to be cafeful which trucker to pick who is going to be consistent Wink

I should have have made every point smaller except that speed = wasted gas Smile

Its only going to get worse. Drive those gas gusslers while you can. We will have $200 a barrel in less than three years time.

And don't blame the oil Companies, they don't control the prices. Oil companies actually find and refine the fuel you use every day. They provide a means for lazy cunts to drive 2 block to 7/11 for they slurpee, or get the mail.

Blame the world economy, blame China for booming and increasing there imports, soon blame Pakistan because they are on the same track as china.

Or just blame yourself for not understanding simple economics. Supply and Demand.

Get a bike, and a bus pass if you don't like the prices.

And what nouse said.

one garage was selling it for 1.99 . Far from the norm

1.18 for unleaded , 1.26 for diesel in my local tesco the other day

no point giving up a car for public transport it seems , public transport price has shot up ands its cheaper for me to drive say 100 miles a week than to risk bus / train timetables

Also if you cycle , you will be on the receiving end of torrents of abuse ( totally deserved as your a bastard )

I drive an SUV. Toyota 4x4.

I bought it used last summer after I had to sell my VW westfolia van, 1980. I love the 4x4 because I love to go offroading all the time for fun. Most logging roads are no problem tho. The main logging road are fine for cars too.

I wanted the 4x4 so I could do the logging roads and carry my kayak to the off road launch sites around BC, like Vancouver Island, West Coast. Stuff in Bella Colla, Sunshine Coast, and Desolation Sound. Some of the really small fishing towns only have logging road access. Those gravel roads are well taken care off.

Launch site are a whole different ball game because some of those roads are in real bad shape. Plus rain and washouts. All my friends have cars which can't do this. So when I have a trip planned, no one can take there own gear + boat. We have 2 other main people who have 4x4's but they might not always be a part of our trip. You are driving over tree stumps, loose dirt and need the traction in both sets of wheels, plus clearance. Clearance is a big thing.

Well I might have to sell my SUV because I can't really afford to drive it around the city. I am trying to drive a lot less, (not truck drafting because I am not that cheap) That is helping me but still I have to wonder if it is worth it. I know gas is just going to increase and so maybe my love for my sport I am going to have to give up. Unless I want to get into credit debt. I am sure I can always do the local stuff but it isn't the same. I feel lame.

Don't get me started on the bus. I had to use the bus a lot when I was younger. I was a target at the friggen bus stop for guys trolling for hookers. They knew they were outta line when they asked too. I never looked like some hoe. I was wearing hospital scrubs (uniform) when they would stop. WTF.
