"With the twenty-first century comes a new breed of struggling independent artist: the indie game designer. Refusing to toil for major developers, these innovators independently conceive, design, and program their distinctly personal games in the hope that they, too, may find success.

After three years of painstaking work, designer Edmund McMillen and programmer Tommy Refenes await the release of their first major game for Xbox, Super Meat Boy—the adventures of a skinless boy in search of his girlfriend, who is made of bandages. At PAX, a major video-game expo, developer Phil Fish unveils his highly anticipated, four-years-in-the-making Fez. Jonathan Blow considers beginning a new game after creating Braid, one of the highest-rated games of all time.

First-time filmmaking duo Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky capture the emotional journey of these meticulously obsessive artists who devote their lives to their interactive art. Four developers, three games, and one ultimate goal—to express oneself through a video game."

PostPosted: Sat, 16th Jun 2012 03:01    Post subject: good movie ..but
I haven't posted into TV/movies at nfohump before so if I transgress local cultural norms I'm sorry. I normally prefer to lurk on the games board as the truth to bullshit ratio is better there than any other games board I have found.
Still I watched this movie the other night enjoyed it so much I forced the kids to put down their controllers and mouses and watch it too. They started off whining but 5 minutes in were absorbed in the thing.
I was a bit shocked to see that it hasn't received univeral acclaim on the net, so I thought I would use the nfohump board to share how we felt about it to encourage those who may have been put off by indifferent reports to rethink and give this movie a burl.

'spoiler' warning:
There are some things discussed here in as general terms as I can manage that do cover parts of the plot of the flick so if you want the entire movie to be a total suprise stop reading now.

why are so many reviews sledging this flick? Most of all on sites where people who claim to be into indie games gather I've seen some really lukewarm reviews of this.

Complaints that it over dramatises the ordinary eg when super meat boy isn't up on release day. As far as I can see the doco makers just recorded the emotions of the game makers who were stressed about that - from here I just thought the guy is in the wrong time zone M$ prolly runs on west coast time n release on that. Still I dunno what time of day it was that the bloke got up to check neither matters - I don't doubt the bloke's angst was real..

If people do stuff that completely absorbs every waking moment as the those two game makers were, priorities get screwy and that was a good example.
I thought the flicking from those two slaving over a hot puta to Fez rolling around in a luxury hotel swimming pool whining that the world is conspiring against him was as good a juxtaposition of the differing characters of maturing artists as I've ever seen.
Maybe that criticism is unfair but from here the documentary makers' eye was true. Esp when one considers the fate of Fez Vs Super Meat Boy. Not in terms of how 'good' each game is. Fez explores some really interesting ideas and the artwork of both games imo is great. However in terms of delivering a usuable piece of code to gamers fez has been rather underwhelming.

After the scene about Fez's show demo is anyone that suprised the 'completed' game is still considered two patch's short of playable by the masses?

For someone who is definitely not part of the gaming scene but who enjoys gaming I reckon this movie was a real education. Most games makers cop a heap on the nfohump boards and a lot of it is justified, on the other hand when idjits spit venom at someone who is essentially battling against much larger conglomerates, over some minor issue they perceive as a flaw in the game, the accuser should be made to reflect on the indefatigability of gamesmakers such as Tom and Edmund. Those blokes dealt with incredible hassles in the only way you can - make a list of all the problems and chew away at it in bite sized chunks.
It takes for ever and is as boring as hell, much more boring than posting barbs on bulletin boards, but ultimately more satisfying. As the great Mao Tse Tung once said "every journey of a thousand miles begins with one step".
When you have completed such a journey odds are you can buy an as ugly as a hatful of assholes cat or pay off your parents home loan - much better odds than the lazy ass who tries to hide his inadequacy by bein girlish bitchy behind a nym.

Did the movie spend hours allowing those of us sickened by the greedy excess of the gaming conglomerates to sound off the same complaints you can find on 100 boards?
Nah why should it? It is the wrong medium for that sort of carry on. The general problems with the conglomerates would be interpreted by many as more 99% Vs elites cliches and the specific issues about the way big games are constructed are far too estoric to be captured in a sound bite then delivered to a largely ignorant audience.
Anyone who watched this movie and was bitten with the indie bug is capable of going online and getting that info themselves.
A movie about indie game makers delivered in indie games vocabulary is only gonna appeal to those already in the scene, most of whom will have downloaded the fucker long before it comes past in a film festival or such.

As you can guess the movie was well recived in our house, altho some of us felt before it was gonna be a tedious watch - it turned out to be anything but.

Quite good, can't say it showed me anything new about the scene itself but it was interesting to get to know the people behind super meat boy, braid and fez.. that Fez guy, wow, talk about stressed out..

It's probably very important that indie games are working properly at release, i've read it costs a small fortune to put up a patch on xbox live, probably why those games are never / rarely patched.
