i wrote a rather lenghty thing as a commentary on a blog about splitting a final reviewing score into two different ones for gameplay and story to make it more objective...

its too long to post it here fully, so i ll just give you the link:
http://psygamer.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=34&Itemid=1

what do you think?

do you actually believe in the numbers-game the reviewers are playing or do you make your own informed guesses on quality by actually reading the reviews or by sampling the quality of the game by playing it yourself, before coming to a decision about the quality of a game?

Numbers are useful ... for example I see a bunch of reviews rated at an average of 6.5 in metacaritic or gamerankings ... so I pass. Actually reading reviews can take some time and concentration.

For serious games, I even enjoy reading the reviews Very Happy
Even if I've already finished the game.

well, in the article i named metacritic and sites like rottentomatioes to be the only useful thing when it comes to objectifying numbers. But still depending on where the numbers came from, the meta-rating might still mean jack shit in terms of quality.

useful for a brief introductary glance on new releases yes. For an informed opinion on what to buy, certainly not.

I need numbers so i don't have to read the review, if it has a video review i might watch it.

True. But enjoying the reviews also applies to games with a score below 4.0 Laughing

I also got to say that numbers are usefull. Its a bit of probability. If a score is below 7 its unlikely that i will like that game, hence i ignore it most of the time, unless im really bored. A score above 9 indicates something nice, so i'll go to gametrailers Wink or even read the review Wink

What you really do is check different reviews by the same person/site and if their opinion match yours most of the time - you can then somewhat base your future decisions that opinion. Then you might not really need to read the reviews anymore and just glance at the score. It's still good to have another source of info about the product beside the obviously biased ads and press-releases.

Maybe text reviews are on the way out, I like gt video reviews as I can see the game and judge the feel of it and gameplay for myself, never did care much about the babbling and scores they are all subjective anyway I know caus' I liked a number of games that where scored low like a 6, so yes I like video reviews but not text reviews or scores.

yeah, video reviews are pretty great, because it shows the dynamics of a game much better than text and screenshots can do. Most likely video-reviews are the future. The question then is how the magazines will cope with that...

Meh i don't usually give a crap about reviews in general, much less about numbers.I rather read forums and then decide if i want to get a game or not. Most big reviewing sites are on the take anyway or so it seems, so they basically cant be trusted. I still might watch video reviews on gametrailers or zeropunctuation, but the latter shouldn't be taken seriously anyway.

The problem is not the numbers, but the inflation in the 1-10 system. A game under 7 is usually considered kind of bad.

I would much rather see that they had 1-5, where 3 means good.

Like others already poked at; it´s good to get an average and from that form an idea if its a quality product or not.

I usually watch screenshots and if I think it might appeal to me I read a review. But mostly the scene-release is out by the time most of the reviews are coming out, so I either trust the opinions of fellow nforcers or just download it myself and decide in 90% of the games that they are boring buggy pieces of crap.

In other news: just bought CoD4 on steam because it is way too awesome!

Numbers are pointless unless they're really high or really low. Only then can you be reasonably sure that the game is either good or bad.

As for the reviews themselves, they're great as long as they have statements of fact in them. A good review tells you what kind of game it is, what modes of gameplay there are, how much content is included, how well it runs (if applicable), if there are any major problems with the interface, and so forth. Text reviews are good because you can just scan through them and find out what you need to know. Unfortunately that's becoming a minority opinion with the increasing illiteracy and decreasing attention spans of kids today...

Associating a value with something is a pretty timeless... I consider myself a slave to rottentomatoes and gamerankings. Reviews are great and I will read them from time to time, often AFTER I've played something or watched something. Before I play or watch, I'll usually find if its worth my time. A GOOD product will have a higher rating, and often it's good to use other products as contrast. Anywho, you get my gist.

Frankly, I think your blog is a 6.5/10. <3

Reviews/previews are so cock anyway, it's all hype out the wazoo. I just watch watch the ingame trailers, see if i like it. Sometimes goto game specific forums. Word of mouth is still the most powerful form of advertising for me.
