I quit wow a few months back, shortly after the release of 2.4 patch so I never got the chance to see more than 2 sunwell bosses. I was thinking of maybe trying a private server to see the rest, since there's no way I'll start playing real WoW again. 
I remember trying a server emu a year ago or so, and it was pretty goddamn awful (f. ex. melee combat wasn't synched, spells didn't work, mobs lacked scripts, like Ragnaros just standing in MC rather than rising from the lava, all sorts of little details missing etc.) so I guess my question is, is it still like that?
Also, I guess there's many different server emulators; which one's the best, ie. closest to live servers? I don't mind setting up my own server and playing alone, but if anyone knows of any good private servers and posting them here is allowed, then do tell (or toss me a PM).

Ascent powered servers are quite good, one year or so ago i played on WOWLEGION, one of the server of the wowscape comunity (google for it), there were more than 1000+ players at the same time and no lag.
I expect to have improved in all this time maybe go take a look

yeah I was wondering the same thing, I tried a few private servers when they first came out and many content was lacking and some of the features improperly implemented. so they fixed all that? how does these private WoW compare to the official one?

They're actually pretty close to retail now. WoWscape has 5 realms and 3 with over 6k people on at most times. I'd suggest checking them out yourself, most talents/skills work and BGs/raids work.

It does not compare at all. They are buggy, lacking, most stuff (for the worse) differs from blizzard servers.
Get a job and subscribe to real WoW if you want to play it the way it was meant to be played.

they lack big time compared to live
-crashes
-lag
-no scripted events
- most of the players on a priv server fucking suck
the only thing I noticed that's similar to live is that you get banned for racism

Heh no shit. They are mostly kids from 3rd world countries on the free servers.

I just started playing again after a 3 month break too. Im playing on WOWlegion (WOWscapes blizzlike realm) and its great. 6500+ people were online when I played yesterday.

this is indeed the best server! You can find it here:

These servers are almost always populated with 5000 people!

My friends got me to try Toxic, Wowscape, and Burning around Christmas break of 2007. Don't know if much has changed, but it was pretty buggy.

Private servers suck. I somewhat feel bad for you that you have no opportunity to experience real WoW. |
