today.. about my lady. Its gonna be a fairly long thread cos I wanna raise some stuff to talk about it.
I know it may sound strange to be talking about personal stuff on the net but oh well, fuck it.
To cut the corners off, she admitted to me that she is mildly dyslexic. Fair enough I thought.. its pretty common, it doesnt effect her daily life as it isnt severe. Shes inteligent, has plenty of hobbies, quite the artist too. I had no idea she was dyslexic and probably wouldnt have had a clue if she hadnt told me. I was right in that.. but what she said/showed me next completely struck me. She has unbelievable mental capabilities. It is like something from rain man.
Honestly I was shocked. She challenged me to test her as I didnt believe what she stated. She said If I wrote a paragraph and completely jumbled the word order and sentence structure up she could read it entirely and put it into order quicker than I could read it if it where set out in order and within normal sentence structure.
In the spoiler I show what I typed and what I jumbled it too..
Spoiler:
-original paragraph:
today i created a painting purely from scratch it was a character painting of a monster with three horns and it had a golden set of teeth. It was covered from head to toe in black fur and I used my favorite photoshop brush to paint it. From start to finnish it took me twelve hours and I went straight to sleep afterwards.
same paragraph jumbled:
i three a From character from brush scratch used was a painting a and straight monster took afterwards created with and it had a golden set horns of. It teeth was covered to toe today it head in black fur I my of from photoshop brush to paint. start to finnish it me twelve hours and painting I went to sleep. it purely favorite
Now.. to say off the task wouldnt be that hard to fix. Id say around 10 mins of work to put the paragraph into 3 ordered sentences for the average person, right?
Well, I showed her the jumble. I watched her eyes go up and down my macbook screen 4-5 times in around 10 seconds (yes, ten seconds) and she read the paragraph perfectly and even pointed out the sentence endings. I was just shocked.
Next, she challenged me to beat her at reading a page. We randomly typed a word into google (something about dyslexia) which gave an article about the subject of about 1000 words, on screen rougly 5 paragraphs. I said 1.2.3 GO and off we went. I read the first paragraph of 5 and she said *im done* within the same ammount of time. I flat out said *I dont believe you* and then to prove it she closed the macbook and quoted what shed read in the coming paragraphs, and was right; perfectly. WTF?
I had no idea dyslexia gives you this kind of ability. She then explained how she remembers things visually. Ive heard of photographic memory so I already knew the traits of this. But once again, she baffled me to the degree of it. She memorises phone numbers in a split second from the mobile phone contacts book and read the numbers backwards; yet she sometimes struggles to take instructions over the phone at work. This shit is insane!
Anyway, anyone on the board who has anything like this, speak out now! Im intrigued.
Also, if your bored, take this little test.. If you can read this paragraph noramlly, you are special. (FLUENTLY, without thnking about it.)
Spoiler:

Yeah, it was for me too. Yet I showed my best friend it and he couldnt read even the first sentence. Its weird; Im interested to see how many others can read it easily.
yeh true. I get the impression that the smarter you are, the more chance you have at reading it to be honest. Its not that good of a test; im guessing most users here will be able to read it.
why not try testing your gf in more and more stretching tests here are some suggestions:
-throw 1032 toothpicks on the floor and see if she can count them
-throw her off a height, 2 storeys +?, and she if she can land on her feet.
-make her do the knife dance with her hand, like bishop in aliens.
-lock her in a box full of water and see if she can escape.

if she succeeds then she is truly wonderwoman.
Zzzzz
I say put a key in her eye socket while she's asleep, make an x-ray of it without waking her up, tie her to the bad with a ticking bomb and show her the x-ray for a split second. If she survives the boom or she takes her eye out, locates the key, takes it out, puts her eye back in, unlocks herself, takes the bomb, comes to you with a nasty smile while you look at the bomb nervously and puts it in you pants for a fun boom-boom, then you have your answer.
ok the reading part was no problem, but it is amazing, that she understood the spoiler above. I mean the word order could have been something totally different.. very interesting. Well ok, if she is that smart, than what are her handicaps?
People with born disabilities tend to make up for it with some sort of other skill. I'm not amazed by this at all of course I can understand how you are being shocked that she is dyslexic. Once organizing jumbled paragraphs becomes a Olympic game (and it will cause everything seems to be now) she can win the gold.

You're right. I know a guy that is autistic and he's über at math.
Dyslexia doesn't give you those abilities, and there most likely isn't a correlation. Even if she were not dyslexic, she would probably be able to do that.
And to be honest, it's not that special. I don't mean to say it's not very, very cool - but abilities certain people with idiot savantism have (like Rainman), are far more impressive. But, she's not an idiot savant, which makes it all the more cool.
I found the last text easier to read than most of Chinup's posts (no offense)
Its normal to be able to rearrange already understood information, special to be able to comprehend ab-normal information. My point of view & writing style is not normal thus my point of view & writing style is ab-normal. You have to be able to think in an unprejudiced manner to understand my posts because they challenge norms. Special just means out of the ordinary. Rue the day i am ever considered by others or myself as normal. Screw conforming to the status quo, the party line, the safe course.
The mind doesn't just record & playback data, it also arranges & generates it, the more you are able to create information the more you are able to fill in the gaps like these word tests. This GF of yours clearly has a flair for creativity, I suggest you get her 50 kg of modeling clay. A creative mind can enjoy endless hours of joy with a big block of clay.
What really impresses me is when people can translate raw data, like say a waterfall, into words, numbers, movements, music, ect.
I am not dyslexic but when I am in a hurry I transpose numbers especially IP addresses. In my line of work that is not good. I have noticed one of my sons does the same thing. He gets in a hurry and doesnt read things properly. My point is if you dont take your tim and read it it can become fcuked up.
I like how many different views there are. If im brutally honest, the reason I was so shocked is because I have up until this point (yeah I know.. its bad, and makes me sound the idiot) that people with dyslexia where.. well, retarded. I thought you can spot them a mile away etc. Thats why I couldnt believe what she was telling me. It just astounded me how fast she reads, like an entire paragraph in seconds, its pretty awesome.
It doesnt really effect her daily life because its only a mild variation. She said the only time she really struggles with it is when she is taking instructions from the phone and sometimes when shes driving she struggles with speed; but nothing drastic. I guess all the little perks it gives outweighs the bad side of it which is quite lucky. Most dyslexic people can barely read or write.
