PostPosted: Sun, 11th May 2008 13:28    Post subject: Best/Recommended PC Games By Genre
With the topics popping up with people asking for game suggestions in specific genres, I thought it would be a good time to start compiling a list of the best games in each respective genre for PC only (as far as I know, a list such as this cannot be found at Gamerankings or other sites).

I will probably need a lot of help to complete most of the genres, so if you have any suggestions for specific games or genres you think should be added to the list, make a post in this thread.

This list is a work in progress (and as such might seem like a real mess in the beginning Razz) and will be updated as often as required. In addition to trying to making the list as complete as possible, I am working on phase two of the, which will contain information such as year, descriptive keywords, developer, and images.

Wether or not some games should be in the list is always debatable. Smile

Mods, sticky please? Very Happy

How could you not list Call of Duty 1? That game is what started it all and it was so grand that I could start playing it again right now.

Its the first game ever that I felt like the battles were more real and the first FPS game where I tried to even save a NPC's life when they were in danger. Goodjob putting AoE2 on there though.

Swat 1,2 should no doubt be on the strategy list.

Swat 3,4 Should be on FPS list.

Dungeon keeper 1,2 on the strategy list.

Lords of the Realm 2 should also be on that list.

And when I fully wake up I will most likely list a huge list of games that should be on your lists.

Just a few corrections and some additions here and there. Smile

ADVENTURE:

The Larry series could easily go as high as 1-7. Only the 3D versions suck ass, the older ones are good.

FPS:

Why list NOLF2 but not the first one? It was far superior.
Same with Red Faction. 2nd=crap, 1st=great.
S.O.F.1 was also good.

RPGs:

Again, Fallout series. Both are equaly awesome, not the just the second one.
...and the first two Gothic.
Overlord is not exactly an RPG. It's fantasy, but an action game at best. A good one, but still not RPG.
Also, X-Com is more of a tactical game, with very slight RPG influence.

SIMULATION:

Silent Hunter 4
Lock-On Modern Air Combat
Operation Flashpoint & Armed Assault (bot are considered combat simulations)

STRATEGY:

Homeworld1...
Pretty much all Total War games, not just M2TW where the AI suck.
Syndicate Wars is a tactical squad game, not exactly an RTS.
WH40k is a bit broad as there are quite a few games based on that universe. In RTS, only the Dawn of War series comes to mind.

Otherwise, good list. Smile

Any chance of listing the year of release as well? I don't bother with very old games that much, unless I've played them before and know they're good.

On the simulation part you can add Lock On: Modern Air Combat and IL-2 Sturmovik 1946.

Well, I pretty much agree with Parallax's list, But I think that Sierra's Quest for Glory series is missing (Those were Awesome Imho). And I also miss Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth on the Fps games part of the list. Other than that, it's smooth sailing Smile Props to you Parallax Very Happy

It's under "Survival Horror/Horror". I think it fits better there, don't you think?

inz wrote:

Yes, I will add that along with more information (like short description, link to more info, developer, possibly image) when the list is more complete. (soon enough)

It's on the list. Can't you read? Wink

I love Trespasser because of its innovation, but I don't think it belongs in the list because of all the downsides.

If it was unplayable - yes, but I completed the game without any patches or whatsoever and enjoyed every damn second a bit.

P.S. rename the thread and make it "Parallax's best games" if you're picking 'em according to your own prefs

Yeah, totally agree with that chiv.

All except the FPS variant one. Yeah, they are strategy.

I added it to the list. My bad, it's been a while since I played it. And I'm not picking it according to my own preferences, I am just stressing that we shouldn't add all games. Wink

How about opening a Space sim category? They aren't exactly simulators, and doesn't really fit into other categories.

My ideas for games for it:

X series
Elite series
Freelancer
Freespace 1&2 (I think I just might install these again)
X-Wing Allaince (the older installemnts are too dated)

Also some addition for the existing categories:

TPS

Splinter Cell series (aren't shooters, but still third person)

RPG

Mount and Blade
The Guild 1&2
Age of Pirates

RTS

Stronghold series
The Guild 1&2
Imperium Galactica 1&2

Good idea. Added. Smile

Added a changelog so you can see what was last added without having to check the list over and over.

Also been thinking about adding a 'classics' section at the bottom for all the games that were made before a certain year (something like '97-98 maybe?). What do you think?

avp2? come on, put the first one aswell if you deem that turd worthy

thief 1,2,3

penumbra has two parts + techdemo + the upcoming extension

fps should be split into more distinct categories like...
corridor shooters (call of duty, etc.. 95% of all fps)
tactical simulators (early rainbow six, early ghost recon series, swat)
combat simulators (armed assault, flashpoint, hidden & dangerous, ghost recon advanced warfighter series)
stealth (splinter cell, thief, hitman, hidden & dangerous)

Thief 3 was a Steep (with a big S) downhill from the first two Thief games. It was utterly consolified, and it is the same reason why I have not added Deus Ex 2 to the list. Anyone else care to comment on this, wether Thief 3 is good enough to be on the list or not?

I have added your other suggestion. And I also think your genre suggestion is good, but I can see it becoming a nightmare. I think it's better to add a genre-parameter to each game saying what specific genre they have (in particular when it comes to the first person and strategy genres).
