Is there a site or something that tracks sales data for games, like SoundScan does for music?

There are no companies that track digital distribution, only retail sales and only in the US. That's pretty much irrelevant for PC games coz right now digital distribution is picking up fast and PC gaming is not as popular in the US as it is in EU. Valve already made a statement about this that all the "pc gaming is dying" moppets use US retail sale numbers to win an argument. But retail sales in the US don't tell even half the story about total PC games sales.

2007 figures
Quote:
of the whopping $18.85 billion the video game industry made in North America last year, only $910.7 million (or around 14%) was derived from PC games. When you compare the 267.8 million games sold in total in 2007 to the portion that were on PC (36.4 million) the numbers dip a bit closer to 13%.

LINK Not gospel of course.
The 2008 figures (early) might come later this year or beginning of next.

And another forecast of "Video Games and Harware in total"
Quote:
The video games market appears to be bucking the economic slowdown and enjoying spectacular sales, according to a new analyst report.

DFC Intelligence forecasts worldwide spending on games software and hardware to hit $57bn in 2009, and 11 countries will see national sales top $1bn.

Even that lowly $910.7 million (US only, minus online sales) is still crazy amount of money and its all going into one pocket. One must know that this industry is very unlike films and music. Here those that actually make games don't even get a peace of pie, only leftovers.

Xbox is popular in the US, but the US is pretty small comparatively to the rest of the world.

no but the fact is pc gaming revenue is mainly from digital downloads and mmo subscriptions which arent tracked. box sales in stores mean very little to the pc market

shit they're already only $300 .. probably $200 by christmas and $150 a couple months into the new year. can go in the already accumulating pile of worthless electronics playing soon-to-be outdated proprietary formats.

downloading bluray never to be played on a physical format ftw Smile
