I want to know if somebody find a way to make it work so far.

I still don't see the problem with steam. Is it's great convenience a problem with you guys? How about it's solid stability (now, in the beginning that'd be debatable), or...
Anyways... I guess I do have to agree that it would have been wiser for them to release steam as an optional system to users who wanted to use it.... but still, it's server it's purpose, it prevents a lot of piracy and it's actually quite convenient for people who lose their cds/serials/stuff like that.

Yeah i don't see the reason why you hate steam?? Is it because they got your scared because you might get your ip logged? Steam is great when you actually pay to use it.

Kommando: When you wrote the words "Steam" and "Down" in the subject header, you were pretty much begging to be flooded with fanboys bantering about how good Steam is, how excellent Steam is, how wonderful/convenient/miraculous steam is, and pretty much kissing Fat Gabe's ass. You were asking for it, man.
Obviously, nobody takes into account the fact that the next steam "update" may DRM your copy, or that the one after that may direct Steam not to run unless it's in a "Trusted Environment". Then again, who cares... as long as we can retriever our lost CD keys because we were dumb enough to lose them, does it matter that Microsoft may bribe^H^H^H^H^H^H convince Valve into it's new DRM schemes, or that Valve has full control over what YOU can do with your copy of the game? NAH...

Accelleron: here's the way I see it, as more people gain connectivity to the internet, companies will increasingly use programs such as steam, or "activation" programs which require contact with servers to run. The logical next step when broadband is wide spread enough and fast enough (I would say within 10-20 years) we will see them start to reside on servers, or have more advanced schemes preventing them from being ran client side only, thus totally protecting against piracy. Obviously when it gets to this point people in the companies will probably leak out versions so piracy will still occur, but I think you are in a golden age for piracy right now and it' nearing it's end. This can already be seen with the length of time it takes some games to be cracked, and in some cases like HL2 only hacks will allow it's use... Valve is just an intelligent company and has started this early.

Vavle is not going to turn their back on the biggest gaming community any time soon.
There is a thing called money and theirs plenty still to come from HL2. HL2 will still sell well within the next 2 years thus steam will still be up.
Im going to look at it from the bright side, your looking from it from a paranoid side.

Jeez .... you guys are a bit behind here. Steam-Down has been around for a while thx to Hellboss. It's just a mixture of ppatcher made by hCPUa and the cracked steam.exe and the steamengine.exe from Maddox. There's already a better solution also made by hCPUa called SteamLauncher, which no longer uses the ppatcher to patch memory, allowing for it to work without having to update ppatcher like before. Anyway nothing works anymore since Valve has obviously started server side checks. People are working on it right now though.

its just like steam, but you dont need a valid steam account, you can just create a free one at steam, then you can play hl2 and css online with no problems :>

As stupid as it is, my only peve with Steam is that *i* feel it is trying to create a monopoly. By creating an application that handles all of one companies games, everyone who wishes to play those games must use it, no questions asked. So no matter how badly they create the program, how slow they are to update it for security fixes or to stop cheating, how many adverts they attach to it and how many spyware programs they install inside your system using it (I am of course talking in a "what if" context), if we want to play the games we are forced to deal with it. In a sense this has begun, when my machine logs on I get a popup asking me if I want to buy HL2 etc, I already own and run halflife 2 on that account, on that machine! It also pushes every other game they have released, ever, in my face. From a marketing pov this is amazing, Im proud that the team came up with a wonderful way of pushing the titles (knowing everyone would want HL2, they now have a perfect setup, the pull to the application and a method of freely advertising the other games).
From a user point of view however, it does worry me how far this could go, not just for steam but other companies.
- Every company creates a "steam" - Imagine your process list
- Other companies begin to use STEAM itself - The potential for ad's and other not so nice software might be too high to resist
- Worms, Trojans, Viruses - They could easily be written to exploit steam, putting a huge number of people at risk (you think unpatched systems are bad? How many steam players are there compaired to unpatched system users )
I might be pushing this too far, but it's simply something to think about. Either way, I will use steam, because that is my only legal option. Like many people have said, deal with it ! And I do.

If you are so scared then make your open source "steam" for companies to use. If it is secure, easy to use for companies as well users then I am sure companies such as Team 17 who has thought about digital delivery would use it.

Yeah .... log out of steam and back in and tell me you don't get the ticket expired message when trying to join a CSS or HL2DM server lol. Six is just a skin. It's all ppatcher underneath. I prefer SteamLoader by hCPUa.
