Hey, way cool. I have been like 5-6 time, with work ofcourse. Have a great time and enjoy!. I really recommends to get some "Okunomiyaki" (sort a Japanese Pizza but BETTER!!!!!)
For shopping...well good shopping is EVERYWHERE. Akihabara=Electronics
Shinjuku=Department stores galore!, Shibuya=For young ppl and gadgets gadgets gadgets, Ginza=High end shopping (expensive) etc etc.
Lots of cool stuff to see and foremost GOOD FOOD! like EVERYWHERE!
Really enjoy the trip man!

Hmm. Just had a chat with my GF over the phone and it seems were more tainted to going to Rome now, its far far cheaper. Japan possibly in the new year. I always wondered about the Yen, what is the equivalent of say 10 bucks in japan?
I know its around 200 yen per GBpound but Ive no idea how much that is; if that makes sense. For example how much does a coffee cost in Tokyo cox?

Oh man...I have no clue. When I am on those trips the company pays, so I tend to just enjoy, not like over do it, but eat good and all that. I can remember that last time I went to Japan (last month to Okazaki) the buss from the airport to the hotel (about 1h) was like 10€.
Eating out, like a proper GOOD meal Teriyaki (many small dishes with grilled chicken and a couple of beers) maybe 15-20€ or so. But the € compared to the yen is strong, so you get more for the dosh.
But hey, Rome is not a bad alternative. Not as "High-tech" but dam cool if you are in to History and stuff.
Oh dear...my

Tokyo ain't bad. Haven't been there too much considering Kansai was my place. But do the usual stuff and head for Tokyo Tower during a clear day and you'll get one hell of a sight from up there. Besides, they built a new really awesome shopping mall in Roppongi last year (I think).
Other than that I'd say Shimokitazawa is fun. Its right where Odakyuu and Keiou Inokashira intersect so it shouldn't be too hard getting there either. Another thing to look out for - imho, is Asakusa, I stayed there for quite a while and everybody was talking about how lovely it is there and I still don't get what the hell they meant. In that case I suggest Ueno which also is a big subway transit hub aswell just one station away from Asakusa if you really have to get there.
If you (don't) like shopping with your girlfriend forever I strongly urge you to stay as far away from Ginza as possible, go for Shibuya or Shinjuku instead at any cost! And don't miss the huge music store at Shibuya either which shouldn't be too hard to find.
Considering you're going for a week I'd say you guys would get more out of being in Osaka or Kyoto. While Kyoto has quite small city core mainly consisting of two (huge) shopping streets and everything else is located around Kawaramachi-dori you can get the shopping done quite fast if you will. On the other hand, you've got tons of other stuff to see and do and get a more cultural experience instead.
If Tokyo is still the main project you guys should go to the harbor in early morning and catch a glance at the daily catch and get yourself some fresh sushi if you happen to like it, if not, just stroll by watching all the weird stuff they've picked out of the dark deep. Besides, there's a huge food market located close to Teramachi in Kyoto aswell.
Anyway, enjoy the trip

Rome has gotta be a cool alteritive. I have been told it is a stinky city tho because they have bad pipes. Alot of stray cats and gypies around the Coliseum. So much history tho. Good looking people and lots of guys on uber-mopeds.
Hope you guys make it Barcelona, I hear really great things about that place.
My good friend (an ex) loved that place and hung out with many of the street venders. He played guitar and partied with them too. For him that was the best time he could of had in Europe. It was his no.1 stop in Europe .
He fell in love with an Irish girl. He still thinks Irish accents are hot to this day.
I am 1/4 Irish btw . hehehe.
