When you're referring to version I pressume you mean distro type and not Kernel version. Distro type doesn't really matter for a gameserver. All will run it but with different performance.
If you wan't some challenge try Gentoo out. It's pretty hard to install but if you follow the guide correctly it will turn up fine. If you don't wan't a challenge or you wan't it running fast, try Suse or Mandrake.

I recommand either debian or redhat, they're stable and suitable for build sevrers!

Suse, perfect for someone who is new to linux. Redhat (or fedora as it is now know) is easy to use but the hacked up kernel it uses tends to be a bit crappy on standard hardware. Debain is decent, but certainly not something for someone who cant use command line. I would suggest downloading SUSE 9.1 live CD, giving it a try to see if you can run with it and to check compatability, then getting hold of a copy of SUSE 9.1 proffessional.

good luck Smile

I've just installed arch. It's a bit like a binary gentoo. It's quite nice and only takes like 30 mins to install compared to like 3 days with gentoo.
