Quote:
More than three years after New Line's failed attempt to turn the graphic novel into a feature film, Netflix has signed what sources describe as a massive financial deal with Warner Bros. Television to adapt the best-seller into a live-action TV series. Sources familiar with the deal note that it is the most expensive TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done.

Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, ABC's The Catch, Grey's Anatomy) is set to write and serve as showrunner on the straight-to-series drama. Gaiman, who created the ongoing monthly comic, will exec produce alongside David Goyer. Gaiman and Goyer were both attached to New Line's most recent attempts to adapt Sandman for the big screen.

HBO passed on it, because of the huge budget required:

Quote:
Sources say Warners, which controls the IP, took the Sandman TV pitch to multiple outlets, including corporate sibling HBO. The premium cable network did not make a play for the series given the massive price tag attached (and likely number of other big world shows in the works) and Netflix snapped it up as the streamer continues to make an active play for massive IP that could be turned into subscriber-friendly franchises a la Amazon's Lord of the Rings and HBO's Game of Thrones.

/* added new poster for the show */

I really hope this turns out good since I loved the comics back in the day.

lol wut

Quality gernallism is quality. Laughing In fact, the author has no idea why the series was passed at HBO, and is guessing.

I don't see it appealing to a wider audience though, maybe we'll get two or three seasons, it's Netflix after all.

And they'll feed the numbers, push to your recommended slot because every single person is into sandman. They'll set it on trending. Make it appear popular and cool and then you'll have to run around your own city to find some soul that actually watched it. Lol. Netflix is a yoke. I thought Witcher was their LOTR competition. Guess it's another show now since not a lot of trending topics on Witcher lol.

Sandman is hard to do.
If they pull it off sweet.
Chances are they won't.

When is The Sandman season one coming to Netflix?
In an interview with Digital Spy, Neil Gaiman confirmed that the series will be arriving at some point in 2021. Given the production delays (see below) we’re currently expecting the latter half of 2021.

Filming was concluded in August so we should probably not expect anything earlier than November or December (or it may creep into 2022, who knows, they haven't announced a release date yet).

2023-ish as to account for Covid delays and just to be sure.

Looks expensive. 1 season only. Do not get invested.

It's Netflix, it should have been HBO.

But right now with fusion with Discovery it could get an axe too, being too expensive.

The new Warner Discovery CEO seems to feel they are leaving a lot of money to be earned out there not having most of the big DC characters with a current presence other than Batman so I could see them possibly moving this over to HBO Max for a second season should Netflix cancel it and it not end up being really terrible.

What's again with this pototo quality trailer, did they forget to upload in HD or something? Other than that, looks good, but lets see if it can beat the Netflixian curse.

I hope it does. But even Netflix best shows get the axe here and there.
Who knows how they track what to keep and what to let go. It's so strange, the decisions seem to be dart board quality.

They really seem to go full on quantity rather than quality. I doubt that's a good decision and who wants to watch a bunch of mediocre shows that are not finished Confused

Sounds like a bad time to read it. You read it, watch it and then get disappointed. Better to watch it first and read it after imo.

It is a good read, very dreamlike and quite a trip ! Translating the art and the more eerie sequences to a TV series though ? Like Misk said, if it had been HBO it could have been great.. we'll see, since it's expensive Laughing

Expensive doesn't equal good. And it's DC... Sad

Anyway, I'll have a chance to check it out myself now.

Have grabbed the above release, but trying to do other stuff long enough for the 4k to appear. Am a big fan - read the TPB's when they first released 30+ years ago, replaced them once with new editions, then again for the Absolute Volumes. Intrigued but cautious how this will turn out.

To be fair, it's a good day for the free stuff - I have another episode of For All Mankind and the new predator movie, Prey, to keep me occupied whilst the UHD is hopefully ripped. I try to remind myself how fortunate we are compared to all those who pay god knows what for all the subs you need nowadays.

I own the deluxe print of the comic, but I haven't gotten to it yet. I gave into temptation and watched the show in the meantime. Seven episodes into it and I can say it's pretty good. There are some genuine narrative moments. I loved episode 6 in particular, it felt so human.

But netflix is still netflix. The amount of wokeness on the square meter is insane. There are more LGBTQI+++ characters than I have ever seen in a single show. There's a lot of gender swapping as well, compared to what I know about the comic, which led to an overwhelming number of female characters.

Ugh....what an awful experience.

After looking forward to this for years, and enthusing a few posts ago, I watched this today and I was very disappointed. Upset, really.

As others have said everywhere, not just here, the woke replacing of established characters and the degree to which it was done here was sad. Before watching I knew Death had been race swapped, and Lucifer gender swapped, but that turned out to be just the beginning. The son of Burgess who trapped Dream was changed to gay and had a black lover. Lucian the elderly male librarian in Dream's Kingdom became young female Lucienne (race and gender swapped). Some of the people Death visited when they died were race swapped. Poor old John Constantine became Johanna Constantine, which actually alters canon as she was already an existing character in the universe, so NF effectively ret-conning in order to achieve the unnecessary gender swap they wanted. Oh, and of course she's a lesbian too. Rose Walker went from young blonde girl to black girl which in the context of her family's story and where/when it is set was ridiculous. Even the serial killer nightmare The Corinthian, who was scary as fuck when I first read the comics 30 years ago, was turned into a fey bisexual who instead of driving an impostor to the middle of nowhere before killing him and taking his eyes as in the original, now kissed and had gay sex with him before leaving him to be killed by others. What's that all about?! I actually lol'ed at that scene because it was farcical. The Corinthian would NOT do that! No-one can even try to defend it as 'who cares what colour or sex the actors are' when it's to this proportion. It's hardly accidental and it just comes across as preachy, forced and clumsy.

But away from that, it just wasn't great anyway. The first episode was ok, as was the one in hell (hard even for Netflix to screw up those killer storylines and scenes), but after that I found the tempo to be slow and especially the last few episodes were a complete drag that I watched just to see how much more they could damage the graphic novel's legacy. Acting was poor (Charles Dance of course was exception) and having Matthew the raven companion constantly babbling away to Morpheus in an irritating accent as a poor way of giving exposition was annoying as hell.

Don't think I've been so disappointed in a TV show that I was looking forward to for a long time. As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. Sad

I'am on episode 5 right now, and it feels like, until now every second character is either lesbian or gay. Laughing
