A fresh take on the browser
9/01/2008 02:10:00 PM
At Google, we have a saying: “launch early and iterate.” While this approach is usually limited to our engineers, it apparently applies to our mailroom as well! As you may have read in the blogosphere, we hit "send" a bit early on a comic book introducing our new open source browser, Google Chrome. As we believe in access to information for everyone, we've now made the comic publicly available -- you can find it here. We will be launching the beta version of Google Chrome tomorrow in more than 100 countries.

The Beta of Google Chrome will be released today 2.8.08 at 9:00PM CET
I think this link will be activated at that time, for now its a "URL not found"

Be interesting to try that out, however I do feel a sense of loyalty to firefox; so I've got high expectations - lets see if it can match my expectations. Wink

Link is up and working!
http://www.google.com/chrome

EDIT: It's fast, but I do miss my FF add-ons .
Looks simple enough so far. I am so used to "Fast Dial" (FF Plug in) I really hope there will be something like this for "Chrome"
As time pass, I am sure we will see A LOT!!! of add-ons and improvements for it though.

Even though FF is losing its shine and getting bloated I'm not inclined to try this new widget from google. They're always trying to sell you something in a sneaky way. Mad

I grabbed this thinking it would be a duff "first beta" product but I've found myself to be *very* impressed. I mean, just to note one interesting feature I'm using right now, I can resize this post input box to any size I like to help me format my text Very Happy!

The browser suffers right now from a lack of adblock facility and the inability to customise the bookmarks bar (I like to show no text, only favicons).. That is the only down side to the browser and as it stands I think everything else it does is an improvement on FF. Fast, clean, easy and seems to have been built in such a way that crashes shouldn't occur. I love it.

I love it. Already made it my primary browser instead of FF3. Now I just gotta see if anyone is going to create a Gmail plugin for this baby.

I only use 2 addons with firefox (adblock and a bookmark bar plugin which I have since found I wouldnt be needed when using chrome as I can just delete the bookmarks titles Razz) and chrome is without a doubt faster.

Faster in what way? Both Firefox and Chrome start at the same speed here with Vista 32bit, and that's with 12 extensions. If you're speaking about rendering speed, this could be true, but the engine (WebKit) is still very early in its development and has many rendering bugs.

I like it. Kinda Safari made by Google Very Happy
And it is uses a WebKit. An Apple's open sourced framework, good Smile

Early ? It is in development since 2002 and was one of first to pass Acid2 test(via Safari browser). Rendering bugs are due to no compliance with IE6 rendering. And if I am not mistaken there was post at project's blog that there are no plans to achieve that as the framework is gaining popularity and being used in mobile devices so it would encourage site creators to fix theirs sites.

Hm, you seem to be correct. Then it's the Chrome that is buggy at rendering, I don't know, and don't care. But does FF3's rendering technology (Gecko) offer these IE6 bugs compatibility you speak of? Hard to believe, yet it renders everything just fine.

Yep, so called quirk mode, then browser renders page how it sees fit. Pages without <!DOCTYPE thingy at the top of source file activate it. Actually, quirk mode is available in all browsers, it is just that in FF it is much more in compliance with IE6 rendering, plus in standard mode <!DOCTYPE thingy present, FF again renders more like IE regarding "white spots" in W3C specifications. HTML5 is going to fix these Smile So, with FF it was design decision, if there is no specifications on how to render thing - do it like IE as close as possible.

Well, tbh, I must say "whatever" on this issue and move on. Fact is I saw lots of bugs during my very short run with Chrome, and I don't care who's at fault - the browser or the sites. Until this is fixed, and most reasonably would be to adapt the rendering engine to render according to what most websites use, even if it's "IE6 bugs"tml, because most content producers will not change their content soon enough.

The only positive from this that I see is that more popular browsers=better website html

Now they get off too easy with sloppy work.

Sure, but this takes time, and I ain't Mr. Principles like some on this site, to not use something because it's wrong, even if that means degraded experience. Until devs no longer use IE6 crap (and that time won't be that soon, IE6 is still dominating the IE portion of the browser users), browser makers have to understand it's stupid not to support some features.

yup
very impressed of first release
it's simplistic and exactly what a bare-bones browser should be
i especially like the default skin
every browser takes ridiculous amounts of space to redundant buttons, text and menus, and i have to go through great pains to try minimize the clutter
here everything is neat and pretty from get go
but i do hope add-ons come soon so i can use it as my primary browser
current show-stoppers for me;
* no middle button smooth scrolling
* no customizations, like moving the close tab button the fuck away from the tab edge to a place where it stays put and i can easily find it without aiming, like right upper corner
* no ad-block
* no exit confirmation

all these can and surely will be fixed with add-ons, once the community gets their leg up with the sdk

The browser seems really cool, though i've already noticed 2 annoying issues:

1) no RSS feeds

2) whatever happened to automatic completion? like when you type in a blank something already written by you before, and a little window shows up presenting the similar words inserted before...

Yeah, this is sad and although I dont feel it effects me its a stupid move on behalf of google (one I expect was not that intentional).. Oh well.

A good read about the speed of the browser can be found on lifehacker: http://lifehacker.com/5044668/beta-browser-speed-tests-which-is-fastest

Chrome is faster because it seems to use ajax intensively (Google's trend with their webtoolkit framework) between others goodies and mature libraries. Also its memory usage speak for itself, taking half less than FF3 in some of my tests.

WhiteBarbarian wrote:

To sum up, IE6 was/is just a pile of shit, because of what was its market share a lot of lazy web developers created their web pages with it -its horrendous bugs- in mind, which in the end caused a lot of trouble to the others -most abiding to the W3C standards- browsers. Hopefully the remaining 30% of fucktards still using it will update or die soon. Wink
