I dunno if this is the right section for this so if it isnt, mods please move it to the correct section?

How do you go about vid capping? I have the hook up on my grfx card and I want to vid cap stuff off of my dvr. Just incase my dvr breaks down one day, I dont wanna lose all the movies I have saved. Some of em are 2 years old.

What kinda software, cables/connectors do you need? And how do you eliminate the commercials from the show?

Any help would be appreciated. I know we have some genius people here. Im sure one of you know

So, please help if you can Smile

Not very clear what it is you mean exactly by 'vid-capping' so I will have to guess.

If you mean that you want to play the movies on you dvr and record them on your computer then it requires that you have a video capture card and not just a graphics card. Almost all tv tuner cards have some kind of vid-cap function built in but if you are aiming for getting the best quality then you should go for a dedicated capture card used for video transfers.

If however you meant being able to save your dvr movies to your computer directly, that is not as easy as connecting the hard drive from your dvr to the pc because those drives use proprietary file systems to prevent exactly that. There are some hacks which allow you to just dump those files onto your computer but each model of dvr uses a different system so needs its own special method if one exists at all.

A capture card (even a good one) is not so expensive but seriously what you are planning is like re-inventing the wheel. Unless you have some not-available-anywhere tv shows on your dvr, almost any movie can be found nowadays in hd-quality on the net.

There are really cheap USB dongles that you can use, with very good quality of analog video. For digital, it's not that cheap, and the really good ones (i.e. the ones used for HD capping) are really expensive.
