I started to get werid textures, so I reset the xbox now get no display only sound, no red lights. So I tryed the towel trick it started working again played about hr on it with the display settings at 480p everything ok. So I changed settings to 1080i started playing 5mins textures went tits up, reset no display, do you think its overheating the gpu?

Would changing the themal paste on GPU help?

Thanks

You need the x-clamp fix... I did it 2 weeks ago after finally my 360 gave me the rrod.
Now it's working perfect and at a lower temperature than when I bought it, 2 years ago.

Not for long. The X clamp is a temp fix at best.
Believe me it will fail again.

Why do people still do the "towel trick"?? Seriously how many times has it been said everywhere on the net that this is one of the worst methods to try and fix your error.

When there is no picture display and only sound, its a problem between your ANA/GPU area. Reflow the crap out of that area on 750F degrees for 4 minutes and the picture should come back.
