It only works on some older games and doesn't run unsigned code, so chances are, you'll get to play maybe a dozen different games from the HDD and then there's nothing else you can do with this.
I doubt that it will lead to something else.

well the main issue I believe is the disks. need to buy blank blue rays which is expensive as shit, then a blue ray burner? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Yeah, it will be hacked.. its just a matter of time.... Could take very long though but in the end all consoles get hacked. The gamecube for example wasnt hacked until the very end of its lifetime, but still got hacked.
I think less effort is put into hacking the ps3 than any other console though, since its fairly open anyway. I actually expect a mini homebrew OS (non linux) to make a common platform for homebrew games for the PS3 before backups can be played. If sony opens up the RSX graphic chip for homebrew aswell even less people would try to hack it.
