So I live and work in Canada obviously, I am a Canadian citizen and proud of it... however I also have my US citizenship and also proud of that...

Now, in order to keep your citizenship which you received after having a green card, you need to LIVE in US and only be out of the country 2 months of the year... I never knew this... I also didn’t know that in order to cross the border from Canada into US, you need to have your US paper on you and show them, if you don’t, it could be a federal charge....

So... the idiocy began last Friday when I went to Niagara falls for the weekend... my causin asks me to go buy booze, and tells me to go to the duty free. I ask if we can shop there since we are not leaving Canada, he says he does it ALL the time. So I drive into the duty free, go in, get my stuff, and low and behold I don’t see any exit except one... as I get on to the exit lane I realize the lane ONLY leads to the US border... now I have no ID on me except for my driver’s license, same with my GF... so we get to the border and I explained that I made a stupid mistake and never meant to get to the border, they say it don’t matter I need a visa to enter and turn around... so I say “ I’m a US resident, can I just go in and get back into Canada...” he says ok, where are your papers like SIN and Citizenship card.. I say I don’t carry it with me. He looks at me like he just found a bomb on me... he is like that is a federal crime, pull over. So they confiscate my card ( licence )and me and my gf are under detention and sent to the holding area to be interviewed...

5.5 hours later I get called in, I am asked when was the last time you were in US, I say 4 years ago... the guy says they won’t file a federal charge against me if I agree to give up my permanent residency and turn in all my papers the next chance I get... basically telling me to GTFO... loll I was fucknig shocked...

Anyway after 2 hours of pleading and a 500 dollar fee to file a court application, I get a court date to go see a judge and ask to keep my status and that I promise to move back into US and live there. The only reason I was given the chance to keep it was because I was still attending school up to last year so I got some sort of special circumstance. Now I need to make my mind up as to where I want to live permanently, it is not easy. Currently thinking of Las vegas police, orange county Sherrifs (my residency in US) and also LAPD.

Anyway, I avoided being sent to Guantanamo bay... hahahaahah... I still love US though, I even saluted the picture of bush on my way out... all these new fucking rules after 9/11 fucking suck ass.

Huh, never heard of this kind of conditional citizenship. Is this because of your dual-citizenship? Are these requirements limited in the time, e.g. asked for the first ten years? Also it isn't completely clear if you are of U.S. or Canadian origin. Why did you asked for the other citizenship btw? Smile

And yeah I would pay a visit to your cousin if I were you. Wink

US - the place of paranoid fuckers.
my cousin got busted by local authorities (pressure from US agencies) for saying some bombing shit on the internet (he was just testing after the 4chan dude got busted, too). but our authorities were soft enough and got the joke; US asked for harder punishment ofc.

THERE WILL BE BOMBS IN EACH SIDE OF NEW YORK AT 20th OF AUGUST. oh dear, i'm gonna get busted now :-[

edit: FBI/CIA/other retards have mighty bots that are analyzing every fucking internet page on Earth for suspicious sentences/words Wink

Or maybe you need an American drivers license? (if you don't got one)

[/nonsense]

So going to the duty free shop ended up costing $500,- and now you need to move to the US?! Damn, that is pretty fucked up...

So if I understand it right you got your US cit from Naturalisation, Green card to citizenship, not from your parents or because you were born there?

I think your situation is a bit different because it involves a green card. It is quite common now for people working with green cards in the states to be transferred to another country for longer then 2 months. They have to file a special income tax residents form and usually have physical US property. Personally I think they should just turn you back if you don’t have the proper paper work

One thing you did that was wrong is that you TOLD THEM you had a US cit. You never do that. You have more protection or rights as a Canadian in the US. (believe it or not, not that canada is going to help you but there are laws) When you enter a another country you have to be really careful of what cit you declare upon your entry. You have to look at country relations, political situations, and law. I would go to the consulate. The US isn’t such a problem but places like Asia. I am thinking of a man that used his Malaysian cit when he went home and got thrown in law for some red-tape thing. Wouldn’t of happened if he used his Canadian cit instead.

Crossing the border for duty free doesn’t work because you have to be in the US for more that 24 hours. After 2 days you can bring back something like 2 bottles of hard stuff but that is the total limit allowed. Don’t listen to your cousin when it comes to trying to save money, they don’t know what they are talking about. Very Happy

PS was in the border line up 3 days ago. Got stuck in it and heard the line up was 2 hrs long. About 1 hr later I pulled into a parking lot of the Canadian side but the u turn was back to Canada was gated. I went into the office and talked to them. He came out and unlocked the gate for me. He said they never do that once you are in the line up you are committed. It was fine. Nice guy tho to let me back out.

Something special about being a cop? Because I know that I have to work my ass off just to get by, so I don’t think it is that special or crazy...

Any no, badge courtesy wouldn't get me anywhere when department of homeland security is involved. And i also don't like doing that stuff anyway...
